Ten Years

Ten Years

Ten years.

Ten years of wonderful days; discovery and learning.
Of falling out, making up, moving on.
Of the never to be forgotten,
and never to be repeated.

Ten years of excitement; new places and new ideas.
Of experiences, memories, inspiration.
Of shared jokes and insider moments,
and smiles.

Ten years of big decisions; growth and change.
Of discussions, arguments, agreements.
Of making plans and changing minds,
and taking the plunge.

Ten years of making our family; one, then two, then three.
Of sleepless nights, long days, exhaustion.
Of managing, getting through, winning.
Of joy and wonder,
and love.

Ten Years; together.

My husband and I celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary last week. What a ten years it has been. We joke that we haven’t done much, really. Just had three children, moved house four times, moved continents. Not much at all, really. We bicker, we laugh, we occasionally cry. I’m a control freak, he’s as laid back as they come. I’m glass half empty, he’s glass half full. I do subtle, he does sledge hammer. I see an infinite rainbow, he sees the snooker colours. It works and it’s fabulous. So, Happy Anniversary to my wonderful, infuriating, long suffering, amazing husband.

(You sound rather like us – I’m control freak and glass half-empty and he’s laid-back and glass half-full!)

Happy Anniversary! What a lovely, lovely poem to celebrate 10 years together. As an ex-expat myself I know what you mean about ‘not doing much’ – we share that joke too! And high five to fellow control-freak with a laid back husband ;) Beautiful post.

  5. Happy anniversary! Such a lovely post. My husband is also laid back, so much so he would forget to breath if I didn’t prod him now and again ;-)

  6. Love this tribute to your marriage as not sickly sweet but still sweet and more importantly real and true. I share some similar traits to you and my OH with yours I think. But only couples really get that particular dance that is marriage. Congratulations on your first decade and here’s to many more

    1. Thank you Kate, that’s a really lovely comment. I’m a romantic, but not an overly soppy type when it comes down to it :)

  7. Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!!

I remember you saying you were 10yrs too and you sound as happy and laid back about it as we felt, here’s to another 10 (at least)!! xxx

  8. Gorgeous, gorgeous gorgeous poem. I love that it sounds like real proper love rather than fairytale love (which I don’t believe in). Happy anniversary and here’s to your next ten wonderful years together. Make sure you actually DO something in the next decade though eh? No more sitting around twiddling your thumbs! ;) #prose4T
