Expat: getting the painters in

THE EXPAT EXPERIENCE

No, not a euphemism! We are, finally, getting the house painted! It’s only taken us 8 months…

Our timing is, as always, impeccable. My mum arrives next Wednesday. The painters arrive on Monday. There really are times when I question my own sanity.

So, I have just sat down for the first time this morning, it’s now 11am, having spent the last three hours tidying. Painter said to me ‘don’t worry about the furniture, but please move the nick nacks…’. Considering that we’ve been here for such a short time and we shipped virtually no random ‘stuff’ (I had aspirations of a clutter free existence…) we seem to be surrounded by random stuff!

I blame the kids… They are magnets for small plastic things – where does it all come from?

And I am fighting a seemingly endless battle with paper, again, I blame the kids… School seems to take great pleasure in sending home a tree a week.

I have been living with a peach dining room, orange kitchen, yellow hall and blood red (why?) bathroom so I cannot wait to be surrounded by serene greys and white, but could we not have got our act together a little sooner, just this once?!

I’m still not quite sure how I will magically put everything back in place and make the place look organised and clean for my mum arriving (you know what it’s like, must look ‘on top of things’). The painters will leave as she arrives! Hopefully… having worked in construction for many years, I’m not really holding my breath for them meeting the agreed programme…

Oh, and I just agreed to host the baby songs group on Thursday morning.

Again, I really do question my own sanity!
