It was Memorial Day weekend here in the States this weekend – so a three day weekend for us too! The weather, and a sick daughter, however conspired against us, so we didn’t end up going away as we had hoped to do.
Nevertheless, we’ve had a lovely weekend.
I feel like the weekend really started on Friday. As the 4yo doesn’t go to preschool on a Friday, it always feels like a bit of a ‘home’ day. We had breakfast in Starbucks, did some baking and had two play dates! He’s getting very good at helping me bake. He really enjoys it, and often asks if we can bake something on a Friday. This week it was chocolate chip muffins.
The boys went to swimming as normal on Saturday morning and I took the wee girl to a music class (to make up for the one we missed on Wednesday because she was ill). She then napped, so I got an hour to myself with a tea while I waited for the boys swimming lessons to be finished!
In the afternoon I went to the hairdressers – it took me nearly six months to choose a new hairdresser. I love my guy at home! He knows my hair! Anyone who has ever had a hair disaster (mine being a home dye job gone very wrong…green hair anyone??) will know how important finding a hairdresser you trust is! Anyway, my new hairdresser is lovely, and this is the third time I’ve now trusted her with my highlights :) Excitingly for her (not so much for me!) she is now heading off on maternity leave! Having said that though, maternity leave here is just dreadful (a whole post waiting to be written on that one) and she is planning to take just eight weeks off… So, in theory, will only miss one of my appointments…
We got the boys to bed early with a movie night (Home Alone…the hysterical giggling says it all – small boy humour all the way in that one!) and we had a lovely evening. I made us fajitas, one of our favourites, we had a glass or two of fizz and a lovely relaxed evening with a movie. The prep for fajitas always makes me smile – yum!
Sunday was a true bank holiday weekend day – DIY day! There are various ‘outstanding’ jobs in the house at the moment and hubby decided to make a start on a couple of them :) He spent the morning at Home Depot and by lunchtime a couple of outstanding jobs were complete!
In the afternoon I took the boys to see Epic.

The boys, and I, really enjoyed it. The story and script were clever enough to keep me entertained and there was enough slapstick humour, courtesy of a slug and a snail, to have the boys in stitches.
Back home in Scotland, going to the cinema was ‘my’ thing with the boys. We went to the Kids screenings at our local cinema most weekends and we loved it. This is the first time we’ve been to the cinema since we moved here! It was wonderful to do something so familiar with them, and it really has taken us far to long to get round to doing it.
Today the sun finally came out again and we decided to go into Boston and head to the Boston Children’s Museum. So many people have recommended this to us, so we felt it was time we checked it out. We weren’t disappointed!
After a lovely walk along the river, we arrived at the museum. On entering the first thing you find is a fantastic climbing structure that stretches up three floors!
There are kinetic sculptures, people powered activities…
…bubbles, turtle tanks, ball runs, water play…
…woodwork, funny chairs!
We spent almost four hours in the museum and only managed a fraction of it! We’ll be back!
We really made the most of our weekend. The only thing we didn’t do was go to the local Memorial Day parade. We considered it, but the weather was awful and I always find crowds with the kids really stressful.
It’s been a lovely weekend. Fun and productive – just how I like it :)

What an action-packed weekend! I love the look of those choc chip muffins – yum yum!! Do mummies really only get 8 weeks maternity leave in the US? Oh my goodness, that seems so harsh. The pictures from the museum look like you all had great fun. A lovely smiley post x
From what I can gather mat leave is a bit hit or miss. My hairdresser doesn’t get any paid leave, so has to get back as soon as she can. Three months seems quite common. It’s just so short!

I hate having to find new hairdressers, dentists, doctors etc. each time we move, it’s AWFUL!!! :D Do love your pictures, sounds like a great weekend. The pictures of the Boston Children’s Museum really remind me of the Glazier Children’s Museum in Tampa, my two loved it there too! :)
It’s just the worst isn’t it? Hairdresser was definitely the hardest :) We had a lovely weekend, the kids loved the museum, think it will be a saviour over the summer!

There is no statutory paid maternity leave in the US, there is an allowance for 12 weeks unpaid, but only for companies with a certain number of employees – I have a post about this in draft! Thanks for reading xx

What a crammed weekend. I totally sympathise with the hairdresser troubles. I adored my guy in England, he’d been doing my hair for over 10 years and I can’t find anyone here that even comes close. The museum looks awesome I can see why you’ll be going back
I know! I like my new hairdresser, but my guy at home had been doing my hair for 7/8 years – hard to find that again!
