This weekend saw us celebrate both the wee girl’s and the 4yo’s birthdays! With birthdays exactly two weeks apart, we decided to invite friends over just once for a party, rather than twice, and celebrate the birthdays together!
Having said that; there was cake last weekend for the wee girl, there will be cake next weekend for the 4 (soon to be 5)yo, and there will be cake again when we have his ‘school’ party… Next year I’m going to work out how I can do all these different parties together!
Having decided that I was going to make all the ‘treats’ myself, I do like a challenge; I needed a theme. Thankfully both the wee girl and the 4yo love Team Umizoomi. So, that set my colour theme and gave me a start on the cake.
I wanted to have a tea party, with little treats and cakes, as well as the big cake. So, I made cupcakes and ‘top hats’ (which I remember making as a child!).
I also made Marshmallow lollipops (an idea I stole from my sister!). Pop a marshmallow on a lollipop stick. Melt some chocolate (in this case I used white chocolate drops); I used the microwave and did it in 30 second blasts. Dip the end of the marshmallow in melted chocolate and then dip into your sprinkle of choice! Again, taking a tip from my sister, I pierced holes on an egg box and stood the lollipops upright to set.
I liked the idea of using chocolate fingers around the main cake, I had seen a few cakes like this on other blogs and on Pinterest. I then found a cake that combined this with M&Ms, which fitted perfectly with the colour theme. I cheated and used a mix for the cake, there are only so many hours in the day, and made two layers sandwiched with raspberry jam and buttercream. I used a vanilla frosting and then put Kit Kat fingers around the outside, leaving small gaps so that we could cut slices. I added figures of Milly, Geo and Bot (yes, I know the names of the characters…) that we already had and made shooting stars from foam stickers and florists wire; and hey presto, I had a Team Umizoomi cake!
It was a wonderful party, the wee girl and the 4yo had a great time. Everyone enjoyed themselves; there was plenty of food, the children all played nicely together; the adults got the chance for a bit of a natter; it was exceptionally loud!
The wee girl and the 4yo loved their cake! So much so, that I failed to get a single photo of them with it where they’re not jumping around in excitement!
Another lovely afternoon :)
I am so grateful for the group of friends that we have made over here, who help us to celebrate these special events. It’s tough when you’re away from home; and family. Each birthday, each celebration, is touched by those missing. But, our friends here make sure that the kids (and us!) always have a fabulous time.

Sounds like an amazing birthday weekend! I love all the beautifully vibrant colours. Go you! What a success xx #MagicMoments
Thank you x
Birthdays aplenty then! Happy birthday to both of them :) I absolutely love that cake – it looks so bright and yummy!

Wow Sara that cake (and everything else!) looks amazing!! I have to admit my heart sank when I read the words Team Umizoomi – I can’t stand it! – but I was pleasantly surprised and inspired by your creative endeavours! X
I’m learning to tune it out! We watch a lot of it… I don’t actually mind it too much, there are definitely worse programmes (wait till you have to endure the stuff aimed at 8/9/10 year olds…!).
I love that cake , it’s really fantastic. And the marshmallow lollipops too. No wonder they’re jumping up and down all excited :D
Thank you :) I think there may have been a slight OD on sugar going on :)
This is amazing! I have never heard of Team Umizoomi but I’m sure that I am not their target market ;) I love the idea of dipping the marshmallows into sprinkles – ingenious! Well done mummy :)
You’re lucky…! Actually, it’s not the worst, by far :) Thank you x

I have to say that the cake was demolished, mainly by the adults :)

Birthdays just aren’t the same are they, although it looks like the enthusiasm from your little ones made up for not being in the UK! Your treats look so yummy, well done for doing it all yourself you are a lovely mum/mom! :-)
Thanks Lou, it really isn’t quite the same; but the kids had a blast and that’s the important thing x
I’m sure they had a wonderful time, and I love the cake and the pops! How did you make the Umizoomi characters? #MagicMoments
Thank you! I cheated for the characters; I had fondant icing ready to go, but then thought I would print them out on card (one less job!), but then we gave the wee girl some Umizoomi bath shapes for her birthday and they were the perfect size! Stuck them to a lollipop stick and popped them on :)
I love that cake – it looks so fab. Not aware of the theme, but it’s all so colourful. Might have to borrow the marshmallow idea! #MagicMoments
Ah, you’ve managed to avoid Team Umizoomi! Thank you :)

I’m so sorry, I’ve just seen this comment! The Umizoomi characters came from a set of bath shapes and the stars are foam stickers threaded onto florist wire.
