The wee girl has just turned 14 months and is starting to use some recognisable words now!
Her first consistent sound ‘words’ were disss and dah – this and that. Not for her, a daddy, a no or a yes – but an instruction, telling us what she wanted…
I suspect that this is a sign of things to come!
We get daddy and teddy (interchangeable at times!) and just in the last week or so she has started saying mama :) This follows the rather unfortunate outcome of my initial attempt to teach her mama, by pointing to myself as I said the word – she was convinced that my boobs were ‘mamas’ for several weeks…
She says hiya to everyone we pass. She says ba bye, waves and blows kisses.
She has a very definite yeaaaah, especially if you ask her if she’d like a snack, or milk and a nap!
She of course has the uh oh down pat – used for everything from dropping something, spilling something, finishing her snack, to responding to the word ‘no’…
She surprised us the other day by pointing at a dog and saying woo woo, although most animals now appear to get the same name!
Yesterday, she said babi – pointing at the rabbit that recently made a nest in our garden… The squirrels got a woo woo!
She has also just started to say yay when she high fives (high fiving being one of her first ‘tricks’!).
The boys enjoy seeing how many sounds they can get her to mimic. It becomes one those musical memory games:
ba ba
ba ba ba ba
ba ba ga ba ba ga
ba ba ga da ba ba ga da
The wee girl is surprisingly good at it – and is so pleased with herself when she gets it right, to a round of applause from the boys!
And, she has started singing along with the boys too… This is very loud! If they start a round of ahhh or la la la’s she joins in :) The boys of course think this is hilarious, and get her going at any available opportunity. It’s particularly painful in the car… Three children all going ahhh reverberates in quite a spectacular way!
I wish I’d been organised enough to write a list like this for the boys… The 6yo was very vocal very early, and had so many words, all at once, that picking out the first ones now is near enough impossible. The 4yo was a typical second child, with a talkative older sibling, and was happy to let his brother do the talking – until the day he started speaking in complete sentences!
If nothing else, this blog will serve as my memory – as three children, and the lack of sleep that goes hand in hand, have left me with little in the way of short (or long!) term memory! Or maybe I’m just getting old :)
[Update 16 March 2015: As we rapidly approach the wee girl’s third birthday, I am revisiting this old post for the From the Mouths of Babes linky, from the lovely Louise of Little Hearts Big Love, which I have been meaning to join in with for weeks! I will follow with Second Words next week… and then perhaps get round to an update (encompassing the next 18 months… *sobs* where has the time gone?!?)]
It’s so visual, all those make me see a cheerful chubby girl taking delight in herself. It’s such a magical time :)

How time flies doesn’t it! The early stages of language development are so cute – I love the way your daughter called your boobs ‘mama’! bet she’s just as cute now but saying a lot more! #ftmob xx

So wonderful to look back on the wee girl’s first words – I did chuckle over her thinking that your boobs were “mamas” for a while! Dis and daah are very good first words – she clearly knew what she wanted and was determined to let you know it. I love that she tried to sing along with your boys and that they loved to encourage it too. Hope your wee girl has a wonderful third birthday and thank you for sharing this with #ftmob :-)

Oh this is brilliant! “this and that” are pretty cool first words. I love the misunderstanding about ‘mama’, bless her! I must get a notebook for Wriggly and start recording what she ‘says’. #ftmob
I wish I’d been more organised about recording her phrases, I’ve lost track a bit now. But I’m glad to have a couple of early records like this :)
Awww what a great post, Boo is at a similar stage to this at the minute, she is 15 months and we get the singing and some of the same words, we get Oh Nooo!! when she drops something though, too cute hehe.
I love all these first words and how magical it is, wondering what words will be next… =D
