Last Saturday night we had our first heavy snow fall of the year. Our first official snow storm!
We woke on Sunday to a winter wonderland. A good six inches of snow covered the ground.
Our winter shovelling season has begun! In autumn, we rake. In winter, we shovel :)
Our neighbours were all out early clearing the pavements and driveways, so we got up and headed straight outside. Well, when I say straight out, I mean straight after we had kitted each child out in thermals, clothes, snow pants, coats, hats, gloves and snow boots! Half an hour later…
A few of our neighbours have snow blowers, so they generally do a first pass on the pavements; we need to finish this job and then salt them, along with clearing our driveway and steps. The bulk of the driveway was cleared by another neighbour with a snow plough on their truck. Having a snow plough on your truck is not uncommon!
The kids love to help with the shovelling, or at least that’s what they decided once they knew snow was on the way :) They’ve been very excited about getting snow, just so that they can shovel?!
The boys had a great time. The wee girl was keen, until her gloves got wet and her hands got cold. Then, she wasn’t quite so impressed!
We had our second snow storm on Tuesday afternoon/evening. Another four or five inches were dumped on us! Hubby did the pavement clearing at about 9pm when it stopped, before it froze…
Every afternoon after school this week the kids have played in the snow. They haven’t yet built a snowman, they’ve been quite happy just messing about :) They’ve rolled and made snow angels; thrown snowballs and dug; sent toys sliding across it and buried things in it.
The wee girl continues to investigate the white stuff, she loves to stamp in it and does occasionally try to eat it… Mainly she points and says sssnow!
After temperatures of -12C for the school run on Tuesday morning, the weather has improved and is a lot milder. With rain forecast for the weekend there’s a good chance most of the snow will be gone by Christmas Day. Although the big piles generated by the snow ploughing will take a while to melt!
It won’t be the only snow we see, so I’m in no rush to make sure the boys have experienced all snow related activities this time! I’ve just let them enjoy it and take the lead in what we’ve done. Even getting to and from school has become a bit of an adventure… But, I’ll save my ‘state of the pavements’ moan for another day :)
Waking up to an entirely white world is really quite magical, and we are lucky to live somewhere with such distinct seasons. The kids have loved their first week of snow.

Loved reading about your first week of winter snow and oh my what a lot you had! Even better to know this won’t be the last and to just allow the children to enjoy. Just think of the fun to come with snowmen, igloos and food dye & sledging at a future date. I am a snow expert reading everyone else’s posts, just need some snow in Cornwall to try it all out ourselves! Love the look of joy on your children’s rosy faces. A great way to enjoy the outdoors. I love ‘ In autumn, we rake. In winter, we shovel ‘! That’s the seasons for you! So many wonderful photos, and poor wee girl with her cold hands there. If we had snow like that the country would be falling apart, but for you it’s normal, and look at your happy children for it :-)
I was amazed last winter at how quickly the snow was cleared and everything got back to normal – it’s quite impressive!
That’s a lot of snow. I like how everyone chips in with the clearing too :) I can imagine how adventurous your school run must be-at least you have a break for a bit before the really cold stuff hits! Cold and wet gloves are not nice, I sympathise with wee girl there xx

You got snow!!! So lucky and i am jealous. Not ready for it to come just yet maybe when i have to go back to work after Xmas break. Love how children get when the snow comes, outdoor playing and everyone making time for family fun.

Wow even more snow! It looks so beautiful though with the sun shining and all the kids playing. They must love getting outside and playing in it after school. The photos are just wonderful :)

I need to convince my kids to help shoveling – they just like making snow balls and angels – but both snowfalls have already melted here in NY. Too sweet photos of your wee one getting wet hands! But youch -12 for the school run!
Yeah, -12 is pushing it a bit :) I was slightly surprised by the enthusiasm for shoveling!
What lovely snow pics! I like visiting places with snow, but am very happy to live in Texas where we rarely need our “winter” coats. My 7-yr-old is sad not to be visiting his grandparents in Canada for Christmas. He amazes me by how long he is willing to stay out in it.
I love to look at it, and it’s lovely if you don’t have to get anywhere! The kids do think it’s great though :)

So much snow! It’s hard to believe that Boston gets such extremes in weather, but the kids are obviously having the time of their lives. Enjoy it while it lasts and have a fabulous Christmas x

Gorgeous photos – that is what I call snow! My boys always think they love snow, until they go outside in it and get a bit wet. Then they cry til we go inside for hot chocolate! It must be fantastic to have a snowy Christmas. Enjoy! x
