It’s the first Country Kids of 2014 :) Happy New Year everyone!
We have started the year with more snow… By 6.00pm on New Years Day we knew that the boys wouldn’t be going back to school on Thursday after all, our first snow day of the year!
Other than a little snowfall just after Christmas, we had been snow free since the last storm. We still had piles at the side of the road, but the gardens and pavements were clear. On Thursday, we awoke to a white world yet again!
It snowed steadily all day, but that didn’t stop the boys (all three of them!) from getting out and trying out the new disc sledges…
Snow angels have become a must do!
As we watched the snow get deeper and deeper over the course of the afternoon, the schools closed message came through again for Friday; snow day number two…
The snow continued into the evening, and temperatures dropped to ridiculously cold! We woke on Friday to a foot of snow, and it was still snowing. Hubby did his first round of snow clearing in -17C!
The snow finally stopped at lunchtime. It was time to get outside and play again. One of our neighbours had ploughed our driveway and created quite a pile of snow in the garden, the perfect start for our very own sled-run. Some shovelling and packing later, and it was ready to go.
After all this fun, my rosy cheeked boys required defrosting, it was time for some lunch and hot chocolate :)
Of course, they just had to go out again in the afternoon and do some more work on building their hill and the ever extending sled-run! Despite the fading light, much fun was had again.
In these bitterly cold temperatures good snow gear is essential. The temperature didn’t get above -10C today, and as I write this post the temperature is plummeting towards a forecast overnight low of -21C, which will be the first time we’ve seen a negative Fahrenheit temperature since we moved to the US. The air this afternoon was so cold it was hard to breath, and fingers and toes (and noses!) felt cold within seconds. The boys were well wrapped up, running around and perfectly happy, but we limited their time outside to 30-40 minutes at a time. It was too cold (and the snow too deep!) for the wee girl. It should be milder (it might even get above zero!) over the weekend, so hopefully she will be able to join in the fun :)

I was so surprised to get a nice photo of him, at seven he’s hit the making faces as soon as he sees the camera stage! It’s blooming freezing :)
Building your own mini sled run is brilliant! Wish I’d thought of that when our drive was plowed out today! Happy New Year!
We did last year as well, we end up with such a huge pile of snow – it’ll be there for weeks!

Goodness me that’s a lot of snow and very cold! I’ve been thinking about you this last day or two as the snow storms hit and hoping you’re all ok? It looks like a great fun day though :)
Thank you Iona, we’re fine. The infrastructure is so good here to get things clear and moving again, you just have to wait for the ploughs to get out :)
Great pictures. Seems a world away at the moment. It’s quite warm, but oh so wet here just now.
While I’m not a massive fan of the snow, to be honest, it’s much better than rain – and the kids just love it!

Wow what a lot of snow fun but, extremely cold. How fab to have some family fun with those great looking sledges, I’m sure the children are thrilled to be missing school and having such fun with their Dad instead. Thanks for linking up and sharing your winter games with Country Kids.
Yes, the extended Christmas holidays have gone down well with the boys :) It’s been a lot of fun, but good grief, it’s cold!

Oh this looks like so much fun!!! I can almost forgive the cold when it’s this much fun followed by rosy cheeks and marshmallows floating in hot chocolate! Yum! Can we come visit? Gales and rain a-plenty here in Blighty, no fun at all! Happy new year lovely xx

The cold really does take your breath away! But, as long as you’re wrapped up and not out in it for too long, it’s fine :) The boys have loved it!

Brrrr! We finally got to see some snow too but had to drive up a mountain! Even then it was only about 2 degrees! My wee man was sooo excited. I tried to get him to do snow angels but he was not really getting it. Looks like they had so much fun and love their own little sledging hill.
-15/16C really takes cold to a whole new level :) I’m glad you’ve managed to see some snow though, my boys have absolutely loved it!
