After managing to read 27 books in last years challenge, I am aiming to beat that! However, I haven’t got off to a very good start. I only managed to finish one book this month, although I am half way through another two…
Book 1: The Language of Flowers – Vanessa Diffenbaugh
Victoria Jones has been in and out of foster and care homes and at age eighteen is ‘released’ with nothing and no one to her name. She is distrustful of people and finds comfort, and a way to communicate, through the Victorian language of flowers. The book follows her as she attempts to build a life for herself, while confronting her past. As she gradually begins to let people into her life, flash backs explain how she came to be where she was. I loved this book. Yes, the story is at times unlikely, but there is a magical quality to Victoria’s use of flowers to bring joy to others. Even through the darkest moments in the book when Victoria is struggling, and failing, to cope with the relationships in her life (and is not really all that likeable) you desperately want her to find a happy ending.
I am currently reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King and A Crown Imperiled by Raymond E. Feist and I hope to do better in February..!
