It’s one of those classic childhood moments isn’t it, rolling down a hill? I have vivid memories of doing it as a child.
I inhaled grass and threw up. Wasn’t a fan after that!
That may be why I’ve never really encouraged the kids to do it… So, when I saw the 5yo trying it I was slightly taken aback.
[My husband is now going to tell me that they do it all the time when they are with him!]
I had just finished a race, my husband had brought the kids to cheer me across the finish line, although I missed them completely! I was handed a carnation at the end which was promptly taken by the 5yo.
It was a beautiful day, so we stayed and played in the park with friends for a while. The 8yo managed one of those ‘couldn’t have done it if he tried’ moments when he kicked a football from across the field and straight into a pipe… The ball was never seen again! The 5yo decided to roll down a hill.
Watching him attempting this was such fun. I love that he did the rolling across rather than down thing. I love that he held the flower in his hand the whole time. I love that he smiled and laughed and kept saying Look mummy!
Another reminder of these simple childhood pleasures. Another moment where I was transported back to my own childhood, although the vivid memory of the grass inhaling was perhaps not quite so welcome! Another first recorded.
And, I’m sure that the 5yo will also remember his first proper attempt at rolling down a hill. I wonder if he’ll remember the flower too :)

Its weird that you should post this now because I’ve just lined up my Country Kids post for tomorrow and, although it is not about rolling down hills, there is a mention and a pic of my nearly-five year old rolling down a hill too – spooky! :-) X
Oh, that’s so funny, really made me smile, great minds :) Look forward to reading tomorrow x
Aw! Looks like he is having so much fun. Maybe you should give it another go….?! Love how they remind us of our own childhoods through these simple pleasures. Timeless fun! x
I don’t think so… :) But I did enjoy watching him!
Fun! I have fond memories of doing this as a child and…ahem…a bit more recently. I like that he found a way to make it last a little bit longer by going sideways. #CountryKids
He loved it, spent ages rolling backwards and forwards :)
Such a simple activity but one every child should try. Not sure I’m so keen on your memories of doing the same! Thank you for joining me with such a great Country Kids activity.
Absolutely, love that I captured it :) And, my memory is not so great, but it does make me smile, so ridiculous :)
I’m intrigued – how did you manage to inhale grass?!! Looks like so much fun- I still feel the urge to roll down hills whenever I see my daughter do it. Love the photos- and congrats on the race btw! #countrykids
Well, the grass had just been cut and I was laughing as I rolled… Spinning in general makes me feel a bit sick to be honest :) I do look back with amusement though, quite a vivid memory!
Looks like he enjoyed it, and there’s no vomit in sight! Lovely moments to capture x
Ha! No, he enjoyed it!
How brilliant that he kept hold of the flower the whole time! I have to admit I’m a sucker for rolling down hills even now. Not sure I like the sound of inhaling grass though… x
I know, I love that he has it in his hand in every photo!
My girls love tolling down hills, even the youngest joins in. Shame about your memory. Inhaling grass sounds horrible x
It was unpleasant, but interestingly it’s a memory I look back on with amusement more than anything :)
Oh that’s lovely. It’s the little things sometimes that make the best memories. Love the photos too :-)
Thank you, it’s another moment I was glad I had a camera for x
That’s lovely-I remember my oldest doing that rolling across rather than down thing too. My littlest still does it. Very sweet, as is the flower held proudly aloft xx
It was the flower that really got me, he held it the whole time!
Oh bless him that is so lovely, I must admit I haven’t encouraged this skill in Monkey either! Lovely to meet you last week, safe journey home xx #CountryKids
Lovely to meet you too Mary xx
Sara I love this post, and I literally laughed out loud at your inhaling grass comment (so then hubby had to read it and find out why I was chuckling). He is such a cutie and I love he held the flower in his hand the whole time. Just a lovely post about a lovely carefree childhood moment. Gorgeous xx #countrykids
Thank you Caroline :) The grass inhaling wasn’t too much fun, but it has been an enduring memory!
Aww, my post a few weeks ago featured rolling down a hill. Such a great and care free thing to do #countrykids
It is, isn’t it :)
The ‘Look Mummy’ is always nice aint it? Like he is there to impress you and when you love their acts it makes them so happy. Kids really has this gift to make every simple situation like a park visit grand =) #CountryKids
They do, don’t they, and we are so lucky getting to watch them x
Beautiful captures! I remember doing this too and loved it. And great to hear that you participated in a race :)
Thanks Tarana x
There must be something in the air to do with rolling down hills! We did it recently, for the first time, and the children loved it! This is such a lovely post and it’s the little things in life, the simplest of things, that can give us so much pleasure. Glad 5yo had a lovely time xx
Thank you! I loved watching him do it :)
I loved rolling down hills when I was a child, but I stuck to the short ones as I hated the sicky feeling that came with it. I remember pre-checking the hill for dog poop too, as the park we used to play in was also popular with dog owners and not all were responsible.
I love the pictures of your son rolling down the hill. He does need a bit of practice though! One of the nice things about being a parent is the way watching our children do simple things not only brings pleasure, but evokes pleasant memories too.
A couple of years ago when we were on holiday, we were at a relatives house and their front garden was basically a grassy hill, so to the horror of my children I laid down and rolled down the short hill. I think I had done it about three times before they decided to join me.
By the end of it the three of us were laughing our heads off and my Mother-In-Law was looking mortified. It wasn’t until then that it occurred to me that my then preteen children had probably never rolled down a hill before – there are very few grassy hills in Greece, so it’s just not the done thing. I am so glad that they did join in that day though, it was fun.
He definitely needs some practice :) I also don’t like the spinney sicky feeling!
How wonderful, I really can remember the joy of rolling down a big hill in our local park. Is great now when I see my daughter doing it, she’s loves it. A simple but brilliant activity!
Thank you x
