Those who read my post about the first time I left my eldest for a few hours will know that I attended the wedding of a good friend when my son was 6 weeks old. What I didn’t mention in that post was that the wedding was in Northern Ireland. We were living in Edinburgh at the time, so it was also our first family holiday!
Any one who remembers travelling with a young baby for the first time may be able to sympathise with our need to take every piece of baby equipment we owned; the ridiculously full car (we decided not to fly, so that we could take every piece of baby equipment we owned); the journey to the ferry that took twice as long as normal (stops for feeds, nappies, feeds…); the hysterical baby when confronted with the noisy, smelly car deck on the ferry…
It was overwhelming, amazing, stressful, memorable and remarkably incident free!
Unless you count leaving my wedding outfit lying on the bed in Edinburgh…
Shopping in Belfast, a city I don’t know well, for a complete outfit (including shoes and handbag) is not something I would recommend doing three hours before a wedding ceremony. Certainly not with a six week old baby it tow.
It definitely wasn’t the relaxed start to our first holiday as a threesome that we had hoped for.
And, it was a perfect example of what sleep deprivation can do to you!
Thankfully, after that mini disaster, any other problems seemed trivial :)
We drove south into Ireland the following day, to stay with my in-laws in Cork, and enjoyed the rest of our trip, seeing family and introducing our gorgeous baby boy to everyone. This photo was taken towards the end of our time there, and is the first photo of us where neither my husband or I look exhausted or shell shocked.
More than that though, it’s actually the very first photo of just the three of us!

Its a holiday you wont forget lol. Ive been baby sitting all day so i know how much stuff you need lol
No, sitting on the ferry and realising I had left behind the clothes I’d picked out for the wedding is something that will stay with me :)
What a stunning image and what a lovely story behind it! Glad you managed to get an outfit sorted out but I know exactly what you mean! When my daughter was a baby, I used to pack everything to travel with her… and then more. Now I look back and realise I didn’t need to do that and could have had more space in the car for my own things! :)
Sim x
By the time we travelled for the first time with our third, we had less stuff for a family of five than we did for that first trip with just the three of us… :)
What a way to start your holiday – I think I might have given up and gone to the wedding in my PJs. Lovely picture though :) #MyCapturedMoment
Jeans and a T-Shirt were tempting, but I did end up finding a gorgeous Monsoon skirt on sale :)
How lovely to have that shot of just the three of you – that’s a photo to treasure. I love that your sleep deprivation and packing every piece of baby equipment you own made you forget your own key piece of kit – your outfit!! Travelling with a small child, especially when it’s your first, is possibly the most stressful thing you can do…but we learn our lessons with number 2 and number 3!!
You guys do look happy & relaxed in this photo tho’
xx
We really do! It’s so much easier now :)
Sara its amazing how much easier life gets the older they get isn’t it? Sometimes I look back and think how did we manage x
It really is :) I’m not quite sure how we survived it first time round!
How so very sweet. A real ‘awwwww’. Travelling with a baby is definitely not for the faint-hearted and you’re so brave doing it at 6 weeks; I so wasn’t together at that point.
So many memories captured in one single shot; one to treasure for life. Thanks for sharing, and for your comment on mine. :-) #mycpaturedmoment 9
It’s funny how many memories a single photo can hold x
I can only imagine what that must have been like! What a nightmare! Shopping under pressure is never good!! Such a special time those first six weeks isn’t it? And scary, emotional, overwhelming… Such a nice photo! I wish we had taken more family photos at that time xx
We have so few of just the three of us, but those we do have are very special x
Such a lovely picture huni xx
Thank you Aby x
What a lovely picture and great memories x #MyCapturedMoment
Thank you Kirsty x
Ah the fist family shot and it’s a good one, well done! You look glowing and your husband looks so proud. Travelling with a baby is not easy, so well done for that too ; )
Thank you so much for linking up to #MyCapturedMoment xxx
Thanks Heledd :)
A lovely photo of the three of you, you look so healthy and happy, motherhood obviously suited you right from the start. You never forget a first holiday. Ours was a cottage in Devon.
Oh, you should see all the other photos… that’s probably why I like this one so much, I look shell shocked in all the others :)
So lovely to have a family shot – we don’t have very many of those. I remember those car trips with a baby including a hideous drive around the M25 with a hungry baby. Shudders!
Nothing worse is there, stuck on the motorway with no way of stopping! We did another trip a year later, this time adding in Cardiff and London to Cork… on a round trip from Edinburgh :) We must have been mad!
Oh, I remember our first holiday – we took everything baby with us! How stressful to have forgotten your outfi, too! Glad you relaxed after that and that’s a lovely photo x
Yes, it was certainly a moment I won’t forget!
You look amazing considering you had a newborn! I looked like a disheveled mess for months!! #MyCapturedMoment
This is the one photo where I don’t look dishevelled :)
Certainly a holiday you won’t forget. I’m going to be honest, I’m dreading going away with our two little ones! Can imagine me forgetting everything! #mycapturedmoment
It was an experience :)
Well at least it made a good story x
It did indeed :)
Blame that baby brain. But at least it makes for a good story. Such a lovely photo. You look so happy! #whatsthestory
I do blame baby brain, my first true experience of it!
