As we had been invited to party in New Hampshire on Sunday, we decided to make a weekend of it. After spending the day in Salem on Friday, we packed up on Saturday morning and headed north again.
My husband and I had won a gift card for The Butterfly Place (which is in Westford, MA) at a school event, and this was ideally located on the way to our hotel in Nashau, NH!
We hadn’t been to a butterfly house for years and we were looking forward to it, albeit slightly nervous of little people touching the butterflies :)
The Butterfly Place is fairly small, although there are lots and lots of butterflies, so you don’t really need to allow too long for your visit, but you are able to come and go over the day if you choose to. In addition to the butterfly house, there is also a film to watch and a small shop, along with picnic tables outside.
After obligatory photos as a butterfly we spent about 40 minutes in the butterfly house itself. It’s perhaps not a place for those nervous of flying insects though (like our 6yo…) as it is quite small and the butterflies literally fly around your head, and are quite likely to land on you!
The kids were immediately amazed by the number of butterflies that we could see and after the watch where you’re putting your feet and don’t touch talks, they were very careful as they walked around.
The butterflies certainly did get up close and personal. The wee girl was slightly surprised to find them flying past her face and this one seemed very happy on my husbands arm, and didn’t want to leave!
There were so many colours and different markings to look at, although very few of the butterflies cooperated for photographs!
The 9yo particularly enjoyed the visit, and walked around with me spotting interesting butterflies for photos :)
The wee girl spent a lot of time talking to one of the members of staff about the moths they had in a container for people to look at more closely! She was very careful when walking around though, which was lovely to see.
The 6yo was happiest when next to one of us and away from any low flying butterflies!
And all three were fascinated by the huge chrysalises!
I could have spent longer there talking photos, and I would have been very happy to just sit on one of the benches and watch the butterflies.
Hungry children led the way though, and after managing to get a few family photos (minus me as usual!) we left.
We continued on our weekend adventure, finding a great Mexican restaurant quite by accident and spending the afternoon swimming in the hotel pool. The kids verdict on the day? Awesome!

The butterflies are pretty! I always wanted to photograph them but ever so elusive so going in a butterfly place is really nice to get some awesome photos like yours =)

Yes, I only managed to get photos because we were in the butterfly house, even then it was pretty tricky!
Lovely shots! Our local botanical gardens does this on a small scale in the summer and it’s always very popular.

Bless your middle son,-my little boy is not keen on butterfly houses either! We went to our local one in Stratford and it’s safe to say he hated much of it :) My daughter on the other hand loved being covered in butterflies. You got some lovely photo’s there Sara x

It was quite odd, as there really were so many butterflies that they were constantly flying past your head. I’m normally not great with things flying at me, but I think because I knew it was only butterflies, it was actually lovely :)
Gorgeous photos, I would have bored my family stopping to take photos too, I have a real fascination for butterflies. Great family photos too, just you missing behind the camera as usual!

What a great place. It’s wonderful to get up so close to butterflies and great the children got to see the chrysalis’s too, a fab learning experience as well as fun. Such beautiful butterflies.
