Fall is my favourite season. For all that I love the summer heat and lazy days, there is something so beautiful about autumn. The trees, the colours, the quality of the light.
With the knowledge that winter will hit, and hit hard, at some point in the coming months, any blue sky day is to be celebrated and enjoyed.
Last Sunday was one such day, and a walk was a must.
Having had our planned hike scuppered by a full car park (we were clearly not alone in our wish to make the most of the glorious day) we pulled in at the side of Spot Pond. We drive past here so often, but we have never stopped to take a walk!
This has been a huge omission on our part.
It is simply stunning and we are already planning a picnic looking out over the water and a trip to watch the sun set over the lake.
There is a path through the woods that surround the lake, and various points where you can walk down to the water.
Our first views were from a small beach, and it was amazing. Of course, the fall colours enhance the picture!
We followed the path into the woods, simply following a well-worn trail and seeing where it would take us.
The answer was a rocky outcrop, extending out in to the pond. As the boys explored, the wee girl sat chatting with her dad.
Once the rocks had been investigated, some quite closely, we headed back to the trail.
The boys went exploring with their dad while the wee girl and I continued our wander. There were plenty of stops for a moment of quiet contemplation. But, with views like this, I couldn’t argue with her!
She was in the mood to model for me, so often now I get a no photos hand in front of the camera, so I made the most of it.
And managed to capture one of my, now, all time favourite photos of her.
The boys joined us again, and we started to make our way back through the woods. The wee girl taking charge of direction, and leading the way!
We didn’t walk too far around on this trip, as we hadn’t planned a long outing, but I can’t wait to go back and explore further. Another beautiful place, right on our door step. How lucky we are.

Are those the same walking sticks i remember the kids having as a present last year? Looks like they are a perfect aid and great for exploring those rocky areas and poking around. Thank you Fiona, it was such a beautiful day and a lovely walk. The wee girl has her walking stick from last year, but the boys have new ones that they made with their dad :) (from some of the many saplings my husband has chopped down in the garden!).
I want to pack a picnic and join you there! As I read your post and looked at your gorgeous pictures I could feel how beautiful it must have been wandering freely around there on a gorgeous day.

Oh what a gorgeous spot to visit, how lovely that your original plans got scuppered and you found this little gem. This looks like a wonderful place to see fall in all its glory, and I just love your little girls take charge attitude!

What gorgeous Autumn colours! I miss the leaves changing colour. Where I live the leaves on what few trees we have don’t get a chance to change colour before the winter gales burn and shred them straight off the tree! What a stunning pond to have nearby too!
I do love the trees, I get a bit obsessed with taking photos of them at this time of year :)

Wow! What a beautiful spot you found. I know New England is famous for its autumn colours but those trees really do look amazing. Sounds like you all had an enjoyable walk, even if it wasn’t the one you planned.

You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place Sara. I can’t get over the lighting and the colours. It’s so much more beautiful than our autumns. Where i live it turns grey and misty very quickly and the leaves are orange only for a moment before they’re all crunchy brown.
I can see why the photos of your daughter are your favourite, they’re so pretty! I love the shadows in them and the view behind her too. It looks like you had a very peaceful walk and lots of moments to just be.
Going back for a picnic and to watch the sunset would be so beautiful. I hope you make it before the cooler weather takes over. I bet winter is going to be equally stunning there though. I wish our seasons were as prominent as you seem to get.

Ah, we have our grey days, but the sky when it’s blue is just so stunning, and the sun does shine a lot more here :) The seasons are very distinct!
