The summer has not been particularly conducive to reading! July was good, but August – with three weeks of family holiday! – not so much :) I have managed to finish two books – but I am way behind the mark to get anywhere close to 50 books by the end of the year!
Book 21
The Magic Thief: Found – Sarah Prineas
My 7yo and I finished this last book in the trilogy that follows the adventures of Conn, a gutter boy thief turned Wizards apprentice. My 7yo has loved them, and I have to admit I quite enjoyed them too! He raced ahead in this one and I finished it a few days after him. We used it for his summer book report and as we discussed it I was impressed by his understanding of the subtler elements of the story. This books sees our hero Conn find his magic, himself and the solution to save his city and friends from the ‘bad’ magic. It is a satisfying end to the trilogy, but leaves an opening for the fourth book – which my 7yo is very happy about, although he’ll (we’ll!) have to wait until the end of next year for it!
Book 22
Grounded – G. P. Ching
Having read, and enjoyed, G. P. Ching’s Soulkeepers series, when I saw this book in an ‘Amazon Recommends’ email I thought I would give it a go. It is rather far fetched (but I’m not averse to that!), with genetically engineered humans able to store electricity, and thereby power devices. It is a fast paced read that did hold my interest to the end, however unlike the Soulkeepers where I felt that the characters were well defined, in this book the characters seem a little shallow. It was a diverting enough read, but I haven’t found myself caring too much what the characters do next!
I am now reading A Kingdom Besieged by one of may favourite authors Raymond E. Fiest. And, I think I might start re-reading Harry Potter with my son :)

I love Magician and immediate sequels by Feist, but not such a fan of his other books – although I love the triology he wrote with Janny Wurts (though I don’t like the one book I tried of hers by herself!). It’s not like me not to devour everything by any author I iike, but I find his more recent stuff unengaging. Looking forward to your opinion on A Kingdom Besieged.
That’s so interesting – I’m the same with Fiest, and Wurts! I loved Magician, have re-read it several times, and also the sequels. I love the Empire trilogy and I also enjoyed Prince of the Blood/Kings Buccaneer and the Serpentwar Saga (Shadow of a Dark Queen etc.) but then I lost interest, the books – as you say – weren’t as engaging. A Kingdom Besieged is the first of the last series (?!) in the Riftwar Cycle, so I’d like to see how it ends! Magician’s End is the final book… I’ll let you know how I get on :)
