Thanksgiving is obviously a new holiday for us. Last year a family we had met over the summer kindly invited us for dinner. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, although it is essentially Christmas dinner without the presents.
I took pie. Taking pie seems to be the thing to do when joining others for dinner, for any kind of celebration!
I ordered an apple pie and a pecan pie from a local bakery (which also seems to be thing to do!). I didn’t attempt to make my own.
I also made a conscious decision not to take pumpkin pie… Although I know that’s what I should have taken, pumpkin flavoured everything just didn’t appeal to me, and I suspect there was an element of ‘I’m Scottish, I will not be taken in by all things pumpkin.’.
I was seriously missing out :)
This year I have made pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin blondies and pumpkin pancakes! If there is the option of a pumpkin cake of any kind in a cafe, that’s my first choice. I have boxes and boxes of Trader Joes pumpkin bread mix in the cupboard because all things pumpkin disappear after Thanksgiving!
This year we have been invited to friends for dinner. We are all really looking forward to it! We head over there in an hour.
I am, of course, taking pie!
But, this year I have made them myself :)
I have made one of my very successful, easy apple pies. I’m hoping it’s as tasty this time, although it’s even less pretty – disintegrating pastry!
I have also made a pumpkin pie!
Having looked up the recipe and realising how easy it is (if you forego the roasting of fresh pumpkin – I’m all for the easy option when baking!) I decided that I would give it a go. I have no idea what it is going to be like, but it looks good. I’ll let you know how it goes!
And, for those who don’t like pie, I have made cupcakes :)

It’s been a day of baking, and I’ve loved it. I am really looking forward to celebrating this holiday with my family and friends.
I have a lot to be thankful for.
I’m linking this post up to #PoCoLo from Verily, Victoria Vocalises.

I’ve never understood the attraction of pumpkins until this year when I got over-excited at the pumpkin farm, picked too many and then had to cook them to prevent them being wasted. They’re so versatile.
They really are – I never would have expected to like pumpkin things so much :)
Oh, wow – now those pies looks good, as do the cupcakes. Hope you have a lovely time x

Thank you! I had never had pumpkin pie either, but I have to say it was really tasty :)
A day of baking is always a good day. Also always wanted to try a traditional American pie!
Thank you, it was very satisfying! The pies were good :)
I’ve never really had pumpkin I don’t think…I think I’m a little like you were in that it isn’t for me. But I have to say those pumpkin cupcakes look spectacular, so maybe I could be persuaded. Do hope you had a good day. xx
It’s funny, I really thought I wouldn’t like pumpkin, but it’s lovely! Most things are spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg etc. so I think that’s really what you taste! But, pumpkin bread is yummy :)
Wow, you talented baker! These all look lovely :) I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thank you for linking to PoCoLo x
Thank you :) And, thank you for hosting x
Wow! Those look AMAZING! Unfortunately they weren’t big fans of pumpkin pie around here, so next year I’ll be going for pecan pie. But I will be trying some pumpkin bread because it sounds yummy :)
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving dinner (I hate that November doesn’t have a holiday so I do a fake one to feel more cheerful) :)
Thank you! The pies were a success :)
It is nice having a celebration in November, it’s a lovely start to the Christmas season. We had a lovely time xx
