When I realised that I had ten weeks of summer holiday to fill, I had a huge small moment of panic.
Ten weeks is a long time to entertain three children, two of whom get ‘bored’ awfully easily! So, I put together my plan of attack, my ‘keep boredom at bay’ programme of events…
We had soccer twice a week for the first three weeks. My sister came to visit during week four.
And now, week five has just drawn to a close. We’re halfway there already and I actually found myself saying to another mum today: it’s going too fast…
Week five was… Lego Camp!
Other than the fact that we’re a family of Lego fans, one of the biggest attractions for this summer camp was that both of the boys could attend!
The 4yo went to ‘Create-a-Car’ and the 7yo was a member of the ‘Jedi Academy’.
Each day they learnt about a new principal. From gravity and friction to balance and rotation. From motors and traction to gears and levers.
The 4yo built a variety of vehicles, cars and zip line racers, his crowning glory being a series of small wheels attached to a large wheel that made it’s way down a ramp with a zig-zag motion – surprising everyone – so much so that the teacher videoed it and showed it to the older kids in the afternoon – prompting his big brother to exclaim ‘My brother did that!’. The teacher made a point of coming to tell me this story yesterday :)
The 7yo built a space station, aliens and space ships. He built jet spinners and an asteroid launcher, had zip line races and a rover derby. He loved every minute and was very sad to reach the last day – and asked if he could go again next year!
The staff were excellent, so enthusiastic. Although, who wouldn’t be, getting to play with Lego all day?!
It was the perfect way for the boys to spend a rather rainy week.

It was brilliant – the boys loved it, and learnt so much! The 4yo has been explaining gravity to me!
That’s such a great idea, I wonder if there’s anything like it in the UK?
It’s great, isn’t it! I’ve not seen anything like it at home, but to be honest, never looked! My impression is that the whole ‘summer camp’ thing is far more developed over here. This one was just perfect for my boys!
