Expat: baby, it’s cold outside…

THE EXPAT EXPERIENCE

Over the last few weeks I have been fighting with snow, ice, slush and been (bizarrely) lulled into a false sense of spring on more than one occasion, but now the temperatures have plummeted! It is cold, I mean REALLY cold!

Thankfully the forecast winter storm didn’t materialise at the beginning of the week, and we currently have less snow than parts of the UK; although more is on the way, apparently… But it is so cold that it literally takes your breath away!

This morning I walked my younger son to preschool and it actually hurt to breathe, and I thought my fingers were going to fall off. Despite two pairs of gloves. Thank goodness my lovely neighbour was able to pop in and watch the wee girl.

It was -15C at 8am this morning, and apparently with the windchill, the effective temperature was another 10C below that.

How do you wrap a baby up against that? I actually don’t want to take her outside!

As it was -18C when hubby left the house this morning I encouraged him to take the car (he cycled in -12C yesterday, but really, I think even he was a bit put off by the temperature readings this morning!).

So this afternoon, I will be walking again (in a positively balmy -9C) with the wee girl cocooned in her buggy by every blanket I can find, to pick up my 3yo. Wish me luck :)
