One week down, only nine to go… I am of course talking about the loooong summer holidays!
In an attempt to retain some sanity (mine) and stop the boys from uttering the phrase ‘I’m bored’ too often, I have organised various activities/breaks over the holidays. Not too much – we’re not sending them to camp for the duration – but enough to get us out of the house regularly with a defined destination!
This week saw the start of three weeks of soccer (I really want to say football) twice a week.
I knew that the 4yo would love it, but I was a little worried about the 7yo – with his aversion to gym and team sports.
But, I am going to separate him from his various devices for at least part of each day, even if it kills me – and the weather is just far too nice to stay indoors.
[This is where the Scot in me comes to the fore, we have to make the most of it, it might rain tomorrow… It probably won’t of course, and even if it does it will be short lived and the temperature will still be in the 80’s, but you never know…!]
So, our first week of soccer was a success :) Both boys loved it, got some exercise and lots of fresh air. They are looking forward to next week. The classes are run by the City’s Recreation Department and there seem to be at least ten coaches, all in their late teens and very enthusiastic!
The 4yo’s class is first, Little Kickers Soccer for 3-5 year olds, and most of the kids seem to be enjoying it, although there is always at least one who wanders off to do his own thing! Water breaks and a snack at the end, while the 7yo has his class, make for an enjoyable time for the wee guy (although the heat on Tuesday also made for a very red and sweaty little boy by the end!).

The 7yo’s class follows straight after, the Boys Soccer Clinic no less, although it is really only slightly more structured than Little Kickers! With the added extra that they play a short game at the end – lots of enthusiastic running around, not a huge amount of skill :)

And, it’s a great way to hit his 30 minutes of reading a day (that we have to document and hand in after the summer…) as he passes the time during his brothers class with a book!
I’m massively relieved that they both enjoyed it, that I don’t have to drag the 7yo to the next class, and that (again) everything is so well organised and equipped by the City. A great way to get them outside and doing an activity (that allows me to sit on a blanket in the sun and have a rest…).

I am linking up with the wonderful Coombe Mill’s Country Kids again this week. I love this linky! Click on the badge to see what everyone else has been up to!

You can certainly see the enjoyment on their faces Sara. I’m very jealous of your long hot summer though! It’s great that you can get some time to just have a sit down and watch the boys having a great time. xx
It’s lovey to be able to sit down! The classes run over the wee girls nap, so she sleeps in the buggy while I watch the boys :)
You know I need to start planning the holidays – and a weekly bit of football I think will go down a treat. Enjoy the break
Thank you :)
What a great activity for both of them to enjoy, and having their classes split means that they can have some one to one with Mum as well. Thanks for sharing your lovely sunny photos with Country Kids.
The 7yo particularly enjoys having a chat :) The wee girls sleeps and I chill for a bit. Perfect xx
Lovely post! My younger son plays football (as we are most definitely allowed to call it) and he loves it. We all enjoy watching him too :)
I love watching them having such a good time :) It’s fab xx
Looks like they had a great time and seeing your 7 yr old reading a book is fabulous. I love seeing young kids reading. SO important :0) My eldest daughter is just about to turn 7 and she loves her books.
It’s great – he reminded me several times to make sure I had books with me for him :) He’d never sleep if we didn’t take books away at night!
goodness me Sara 9 weeks is a very long school holiday break isnt it? football is a great way to amuse the boys and wear them out a bit and you have taken some lovely photos of them enjoying having a kick about. i also like the photos of them reading – they look so relaxed. so now you just have 8 more weeks to think of more fun things to do – good luck x x
Thanks! Sunny day activities are no problem, it’s the rainy days that are a bit tricky! No soft play option near here :) It is a long holiday, so I’m trying to be very organised… The soccer has been a success!
Yay – I can’t wait until Dexter is old enough to play football. I used to love going to my brothers 5-a-side matches when I was younger – great opportunity to flirt with the boys!

I always wished I had a big brother ;)
