The theme from Tara for The Gallery this week is Door.

We’ve now been in the States for a year.
The first six months are a blur of all things new.
Then winter arrived with a vengeance.
It is no secret that I hated the snow.
The morning when we couldn’t open either our front or back screen-doors epitomises a particularly low point. The above photo shows our back screen-door… My husband had to gradually dig us out, scooping snow away a bit at a time until he could open the door – then snowshoe around to the front door and dig it out too!
But, the snow melted (eventually!) and spring arrived. Followed by the glorious summer that we are experiencing now.
And I can finally make the most of one of my favourite parts of our new house – the front porch. The perfect place to enjoy the last rays of evening sunshine, glass of something chilled in hand.
This is more like it. This is the New England that I imagined.
A welcoming approach to our front door. A warm hello as you climb the steps.
Comfortable, relaxed, watching the world go by – a good evening from the dog walkers, a hello from the neighbours.
Porch parties with next door, joined by visitors from across the street and the house on the corner.

I love your porch! How lucky to be living in Boston. I visited there once and fell in love :)
It’s a lovely city – one of my favourites. I feel very lucky!
Oh I love your door and your porch ….it’s a dream. What a great post and so pleased to hear you’re happier now
Thank you, summer beats winter hands down :) The porch is such a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by.
What a beautiful place to sit and spend a while.
It really is :)
Ooh porch parties sound ace! I wouldn’t like the snow either, but good to have defined seasons that you know will pass
That is very true, we have proper seasons over here – none of this chilly and wet for nine (12) months, like we seem to have in Scotland :)
Oh I so want to follow in your footsteps and travel to live where you are – and have a wrap around porch, neighbours who visit it, and that life
It is a nice life, took a little getting used to, but it is lovely to live in a community like this x
We too had a ridiculous winter, and very strict rules to follow on snow clearance! :D Love your front porch, looks so inviting! :)
Oh, yes – many a morning was spent digging out the pavement..! I love my porch too :)
Wow, that is such an American looking door – exactly like you see in the films! I didn’t realise you’d only been there a year.
Yeah, just a year – it’s flown, but also feels like we’ve been here for a lot longer. My porch does feel very American to me :)
aw i love the porch party idea..maybe we will have that sort of thing when we move!
The porch parties are lovely – chatty gatherings of a few neighbours – and we can listen out for the kids :)
Love when a good summer comes along and wipes away all the winter blues… or whites as was the case with your heap of snow!
Absolutely! We’ve been enjoying the summer a lot :)
This is one of the things that I love the most about New England style houses, those fabulous porches, they just epitomise America living for me :)
They really do, don’t they! When we first arrived I would wander the streets getting my bearings and just marvel at all the different coloured houses with their porches :) So pretty!
LOVE your porch and front door! And no fan of the winter either… ;)
Thank you!
