The 7yo received some great birthday presents back in June. One of the coolest was a huge styrofoam glider. We’d been so busy over the summer that we hadn’t built it.
My mum flew back to the UK last Saturday evening, so we wanted to keep the kids busy and distracted on Sunday.
Out came the glider…
First test flights took place in our back garden…
Test flights deemed a success, but a few notes taken…
Technical difficulties encountered:
1. Slight tendency towards nose dives… Nose repaired/reinforced with left over black stickers and insulation tape…
2. Wings pop off on landing… Decided this was a sensible ‘fail safe’ to ensure hours more fun…
3. Glider the same size as 4yo… No immediate solution found!
4. Wings detached for travel to park and left behind… Daddy ran back to get them :)
Once in the park, the glider was put through its paces…
Success!
This was definitely an activity for the two big boys – the wee boy and wee girl were less impressed!
So, I took them to the play park!
The 7yo was thoroughly impressed with his present, it was great fun and flew reasonably well. Biggest boy is now wondering how to modify the design – it needs a little more weight at the back to counteract the nose dives, but not too much or it will stall…! I can feel some more experiments and test flights coming :)

That looks like a fabulous glider. So impressed that your eldest made it fly. The making of an engineer, I think. Yes, definitely hours of fun with this glider. Oh, but the photo of the other two. I hope they had fun too.
He and hubby had a great time with it! I took the wee ones to the swings, they had more fun there :)
haha your wee man looks so fed up in that picture Sara, his wee folded arms are brilliant. We have a couple of much smaller versions of the glider and they are not easy to master, ours nose dive a lot! Well done to your big boy for being able to fly it, especially as it’s huge in his wee hands. It looks like he thoroughly enjoyed himself x
The 7yo had a great time, the 4yo – bored! He was much happier once I took him to the play park :) I’m just waiting for my biggest boy to start modifying the glider!

It was certainly easier than a kite! So, more fun for the 7yo :)
Heck it’s enormous! I can imagine my husband would have just as much fun with this as our little boy!
It was a toss up as to whether the 7yo or hubby was having more fun :)
What a fantastic toy, my brother would have loved this growing up. I hope he works out how to reduce the nose dives :0)
