If you are a regular reader of my blog you will know that my husband and I just celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary.
We bought our very first digital camera (a pretty rubbish 3MP job!) for the holiday we took to celebrate our first wedding anniversary… Most of the photos from that trip are pretty blurry, but flicking through them brings back lovely memories.
We had moved from London (back) to my hometown of Edinburgh a few months before we got married. My husband hadn’t spent too much time in Scotland (other than for rugby matches!) before then so, as our anniversary approached, we decided to take two weeks and explore.
We travelled up the east coast, going as far north as Inverness before heading west to Ullapool, taking in Achiltibue – the most northerly point we hit during our trip – then heading south to Skye, Fort William and Oban.
We camped on the beach in Ullapool, in the forests of Aviemore and Glencoe and on the shores of Loch Lomond. We visited castles, standing stones, and the sites of ancient battles. We picnicked with waterfalls, mountains and beaches for a view. We visited places remembered from my childhood, while making memories of our own.
We camped for most of the holiday, enjoying the beautiful Scottish countryside and fighting a losing battle with the infamous midges. But, for our anniversary we booked into a lovely hotel!
This photograph was the view from our hotel room, looking out over Loch Linnhe.
We sat in the window watching the sun set before heading downstairs for a wonderful meal that was followed by coffee in the lounge, where we met one of life’s true characters. He regaled us with stories and provided memorable entertainment for the rest of the evening – who knew solitaire was so complex…!?
Fortuitously, six years later, a project I had worked on in Fort William had it’s official opening the weekend of our anniversary and we combined my attendance at that with a lovely return visit to the hotel to celebrate our seventh wedding anniversary :)
The view was just as beautiful.

What a beautiful picture Sara, but then it is a very beautiful part of the world, I love Oban and I adore Loch Lomond, I could quite happily move to a little log cabin on the shoreline of it and never go anywhere else again x
Oban is one of my favourite places – lots of childhood memories – but I love the West Coast full stop, I could happily live in a cottage, looking out over the sea, it would be blissful xx

Sounds like an amazing place to celebrate your anniversary. My husband has family in Scotland so we visit quite a lot but we have yet to head up that way together to explore. Lovely photo too.
