It’s the way I tell ’em…

When do kids start to get jokes?

I mean really get them; know how to tell them; understand the concept of a punchline; actually get the joke?

Slapstick is easy – you see someone get a pie in the face or fall over in a ridiculous way, you laugh. The success of You’ve Been Framed proves that.

Toilet humour, also easy – well, with my boys anyway! – there is no joke, per say, just a competition to be as revolting as possible.

At the weekend, my boys set up a joke, told it, and I fell for it.

A first, worthy of remembering? A milestone? A somewhat slow on the uptake mummy?!

7yo: Mummy, I see you under there.
Me: What, sweetheart?
7yo: I see you under there mummy.
Me: You see me under where?

Get it…? Took me a minute!

Cue two boys hysterically giggling, ‘you see my underwear, you see my underwear, mummy just said, “you see my underwear”!!!’

Boys!
