The 7yo’s feet are getting big!
He now takes a US size 2 (UK size 1.5)… The unexpected consequence of this is that, where once there was Velcro, now there are laces!
So, we set about teaching him to tie his shoe laces…
His first attempts resulted in lots of knots! He would head off to school with his laces tied by me and return home with them tied by himself… He then of course just pulled his shoes off and left them lying in the middle of the floor (as children do!).
There were several mornings where it took me a good five minutes to untangle his laces before he could put his shoes on, cursing all the while that I’d forgotten, again, to check them the night before.
This weekend though, he finally got it!
It still takes him a few minutes, and he needs to concentrate! But, another milestone achieved, another skill ticked off :)

Well done! I have a admit as a teacher it is something I find frustrating when parents send their children into school in laced up shoes before they can tie them. I didn’t really think too much about laces being the only option. Certainly a life skill.
It’s a big step! I found a pair of boots for my daughter that we loved so much she had to learn how to tie the laces. She ended up doing all the other children’s laces for them.
I’ve always thought your lad looks quite tall for 7. Is this so?
I suspect he was driving his teacher nuts until he got the hang of it :)
He is quite tall, certainly one of the taller kids in his class (although he is also one of the youngest), pretty much following the 75th percentile, so not huge but above average :) He’ll be the same size as me by the time he’s about 11!
It took a while, and he’s still a little slow, but he’s done it! I’m fairly certain his teacher wasn’t too impressed before then :) But, he wasn’t alone! I’m sure if I hunted I could find Velcro, but he needed to learn anyway :)
Learning to tie laces is a huge step! I always refused to tie them for my Year 2 class to encourage them to learn – mean teacher ;)

Has to be done though :) I think my son’s teacher was/is probably getting sick of tying his (and others!) shoelaces!

I know, there are so many things we take for granted now – it’s very interesting when you have to teach them to someone else!
Congratulations little man :0) It really is a skill but it’s one of those things you take for granted as an adult. I’m bet he is so proud that he can now tie his laces without any help.
