We met our Elf on the Shelf last year. On December 1st our appointed Elf arrived, ready to keep an eye on the kids and report back to Santa each evening. He was duly christened Elfie (!) and the boys were entertained until Christmas Eve, looking for him each morning.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Elf on the Shelf, once help is requested, your Elf is sent by Santa to watch the children of the house. Each evening your Elf zooms back to Santa to tell him whether said children should be on the naughty or nice list… Each morning he appears back in a different place and you must find him. And, a bit like never feeding mogwai/gremlins, the warnings against touching your Elf are dire. Do not touch your Elf or the magic will be lost and you will most definitely end up on the naughty list with coal in your stocking!
Two things struck me about our Elf:
One, if I’m honest, he’s a little creepy (sorry Elfie!). Not being a fan of puppets, our funny looking little Elf is not top of my list of favourite things. Which is why he enjoyed giving me frights in the morning as much as he did finding interesting hiding spots from the kids…
Two, I’m not entirely convinced that he had any real effect on the kids behaviour (again, sorry Elfie!), but the threat of our Elf telling tales to Santa did stop a few outbursts in their tracks :)
And, he was fun!
The kids got quite attached to Elfie and were so sad to see him go on Christmas Eve that Elfie left a note behind for them. It’s still on the fridge…!
Elfie arrived back at the weekend, appearing overnight in the wee girls room. The boys are very excited.
Elfie has so far watched us in the shower, from on top of the medicine cabinet and watched the boys sleep, from the top of their bookshelf (I did say he was a little creepy…).
This morning the boys found him on top of the wee girls play kitchen, having a little snack…
I think we’re going to have fun!

We were sat watching tele on Sunday night and our elf was on the fireplace. Hubby says to me ” it feels like he’s always looking at me,” I think it’s making him paranoid!

Really not sure about the elf thing….he is a little creepy….but love the idea of starting the tradition and the naughty/nice list though Boy has his doubts.

(normal voice) This time of year can be so exciting for the children and it sounds like the Elf on the Shelf can help to bring some order. We’ve opted for a different approach with the same aim, by using Elf points. Although I do think it must be fun seeing the Elf’s different antics each day. #LetKidsBeKids

It’s weird but it should be great fun! Good to hear you have an Elfie – POD almost named ours Elf the Elf! She then decided on Ben, then we had Jake and now we’re back to Ben again. Definitely no improvement with the behaviour – she’s not even convinced he goes anywhere!
Yeah, I’m not convinced he’s having any real effect on behaviour, but he is a lot of fun :)
The creepiness is why we have an Arsenal Santa on the shelf and not a proper elf one… To be honest I wasn’t really expecting it to affect the kids behaviour, but it would be very nice if it did!
The sad thing is, that 5 days in, and I’m already running out of hiding places…
Yeah, we’re running out too, I’m going to have to start getting creative with activities, rather than places I think. It still gives me a fright if hubby hides it from me too… :)
