I wish, I wish…
‘I grant you three wishes, use them wisely;
I grant you three wishes, choose carefully.’
Where do you start, with this powerful gift?
What can you fix, what can you change?
Is it wise to look out wards; think big?
Can world peace be achieved simply;
A single thought fixing all;
Changing hearts and minds and history.
All in a single wish?
Can we end hunger in one fell swoop;
Share wealth and resources;
Make crops grow, control nature, end greed?
All in a single wish?
Can we cure all ills;
End sickness and pain;
Find answers and change lives; give hope?
All in a single wish?
Or, do we start small, look to ourselves;
Take this gift and make our own dreams come true?
I wish happiness for my children.
I wish them love and laughter and understanding.
To be who they want to be; what they want to be.
To cherish each moment; live lives full of choice.
I wish that my father had lived to become a grandfather;
I wish that my children knew him.
That he could hear them laugh, see them smile.
That he was part of their lives; and mine.
I wish for fulfillment;
To feel joy and contentment;
To feel excitement and satisfaction;
To feel that I have made a difference.
Perhaps these small wishes
Lead us towards the big ones.
Perhaps a life filled with choice
Is what is needed to effect change.
Perhaps a life filled with happiness
Is what is needed to help others.
And perhaps a life tinged with sadness,
With what might have beens and unspoken dreams
Teaches us empathy and kindness and hope.
Because without hope,
Without an urge for change,
A drive to better,

Interesting that many of us seem to have had exactly the same initial thoughts – I should be wishing to end world hunger, etc.! But now I kind of wish (!) I’d saved a little one for my children – for their health, wealth and happiness in life and that they will always be safe, never experience bullying and that we remain a close-knit unit as they grow. Slightly more profound than ‘smaller boobs’ ;-)
Oh, I don’t know, I’m a 30FF so I can really relate to that particular wish, it’s been one of mine for a long time! The problem really is that you just can’t choose only three…

Beautiful poem. The bit about your Father struck a chord. I wish I could change the course of time and bring mine back, so he gets to see his little grandson blossom into a lovely young man.

I think looking at ourselves and starting small would be a great starting point. Sadly, many seem incapable of looking beyond themselves, so I think my wish would be that we were all capable of taking the wider view. :-) (prose4T etc)
