Country Kids: the new balance bike

20140418-172113.jpg

The wee girl’s main birthday present was a balance bike. She’s been trying to climb on to her brother’s bikes, so it was time to get her own. It’s still slightly too tall for her, but that doesn’t stop her from giving it a good go.

This week, the bike has been out most days. In fact, she gets her shoes, coat and helmet and stands at the back door shouting go outside, get bike! at me.

On Monday we had the rare treat of daddy taking a random day off work. He has more patience than me, and spent ages outside with her on the bike. Although, in my defence, she has been out on it every day since! But, it’s impossible to take photos and hold her steady… and it was warm on Monday; sadly the rest of the week wasn’t! Snow in the middle of April anyone?!

She loves my bike and my hat, in fact she likes to wear her helmet whether she’s on the bike or not. And, she’s getting more confident on it. She just needs to grow another half inch and she’ll be off (or hubby will hacksaw a bit off the seat post…).

My little girl is not so little anymore. Just two years old and so confident and fearless. She has to keep up with her brothers; do everything that they do. She is convinced she’s five!

It’s bittersweet watching these moments, it’s the last time we’ll witness this toddler stage of growing confidence and skill. Watch the change from clumsy baby to coordinated child. All the more reason to record and remember. It’s such a special time, so full of discovery and fun. Seeing her grin of happiness and pride is truly a precious moment.

And, for those that spotted the reference to snow… This was our garden on Wednesday morning!

I’m sure Spring will arrive eventually :) And, along with it many more firsts and moments to treasure.

Awww, bless her… and what a cute bike (I have complimented you on your choice of bikes before, haven’t I?). My little Beanie tried her brother’s balance bike yesterday and ended up spending the whole time at the side of the bike rather than on it! x Mel

    1. Thank you :) She is very determined! I suspect it won’t take her long to get the hang of it!

    1. Balance bikes are brilliant. My oldest wasn’t that keen, but my younger son loved his and was able to ride his first proper bike (albeit with stabilisers) before he was three as a result :)

  2. I can’t believe you still have snow when we are getting sun burnt this week in Cornwall. Your little girl looks so grown up on her balance bike, She is clearly loving the challenge and determined to keep up with her older brothers, they had better watch out!

    1. Well, it was in the 20’s on Monday, then sub zero again on Wednesday morning! Crazy weather :) She does love a challenge, not afraid of trying at all, if she sees the boys do it, she wants to try too!

My husband is a very keen cyclist, so getting the kids on their bikes is important to him x

She does, doesn’t she :) I know what you mean, each new stage is so fun but sometimes you just want to hold on to the moment x

SNOW in April!!! Brrrr hoping you get sunshine soon! What a lovely set of pictures looks like you had lots of fun x

  4. Awww and she looks so happy with her new bike! :) Snow again? Oh dear, all the while I thought it was finally gone. #CountryKids.

  5. I love her bike! I know what you mean about trying to record and remember these days though – EJ has inherited JJ’s old balance bike but his legs are still a bit too short. He loves attempting to walk along with it under him though – it took JJ some time get the hang of it when he was little but once he did he was a whizz and we used to get lots of comments when we were out at the park! #CountryKids

The 5yo absolutely loved his balance bike, and it was such a good way to teach him to ride his proper bike. The wee girl is desperate to be just like her brothers :)

  6. My goodness. She suddenly seems a whole lot bigger. I remember my eldest refusing to take her helmet off. Long may they love wearing their helmets. Hard to believe you still have the option of snow. Least its not quite so much. #CountryKids

I think it’s watching her big brothers that does it, she wants to do everything they do :)

  11. Hello there o that’s great! Our little boy loves his balance bike and we have just got him a bike for his birthday so looking forward to exploring that! Lovely photos, and lovely to see the snow-we’ve only been a couple of times but fell in love with Boston! xxx

    1. mumturnedmom

Thank you! My 5yo also loved his balance bike, the wee girl seems to be following in his footsteps :) Boston is a beautiful city x

  12. Can’t believe how fast she is growing up, I suppose that’s what older siblings do. It’s great to hear now much she loves her little bike, they will all be going out on them together soon.
