Well… from a literal perspective, speaking as a vegetarian (!), I’d have to disagree. My husband however would agree completely!
I don’t know if it’s just us (I suspect it might be…!) but we use this phrase to mean many things: to indicate when something is perfect; to note when something is missing; to highlight a difference of opinion…
As people, my husband and I are quite different. Much as our literal responses to this statement are polar opposites; the meat loving Irish man versus the 30-year vegetarian; our approaches to life are quite different too.
This is not a bad thing.
While I panic and stress unecessarily, he calmly approaches an issue and deals with it. While I see a disaster waiting to happen, he sees an opportunity. While I look for problems, he looks for solutions.
But!
While he steams ahead without reading instructions, I take notes… just in case! When he forgets people’s names, I remind him (and tell him where he met them, when he last saw them, what they talked about, the names of their children…). While he happily leaves the house empty handed, I follow with everything we need!
I believe we all have our ‘bacon’; something that makes life that bit better; more complete, more fulfilling. If we’re lucky, we work out what it is. If we’re even luckier, we find someone who complements and enhances our own efforts and generally makes life easier.
Mine books the holidays while I do the packing!
Mine paints the walls while I choose the colours (sometimes more than once).
Mine builds the furniture with good grace while I design the space.
Mine creates elaborate games out of nothing while I do crafts and baking and art.
Mine gets up when the kids wake in the middle of the night while I do the nappies.
Mine is calm and laid back while I’m not!
We may approach life differently, and this can at times cause conflict, but we complement each other and our individual strengths balance the other’s weaknesses. We are stronger together.
Life is better when you find your bacon.
Several people asked me where I got my inspiration for this week’s Prompt, and I have to give credit to my husband for this one. I have also subsequently discovered it’s the name of a Cookbook; that’s Christmas sorted :)
You can find this weeks linky here.

I love the parallels you’ve made here hon, makes complete sense. I guess I can count myself fortunate to have found my bacon too xx
Thank you lovely, makes you feel very lucky, doesn’t it x
Such a lovely post! It’s great that you and your husband complement one another so well. And as a fellow vegetarian I’m totally with you on the bacon!
Thanks Izzy! I’d be pretty lost without him to be honest :)
Aww that’s lovely. Your relationship sounds much like mine, Hubbie and I are polar opposites in most things but together we make quite a team! :-)
Thank you, it certainly works for us… most of the time :)
Perfect for each other! Opposites attracts =) #pocolo
Thank you Merlinda x
I’ve never thought of ‘bacon’ in this way before!! The reason I haven’t written a post this week is because the title only spoke to me of a post discussing the differences of opinion between vegetarians and meat eaters and as my entire family are meat eaters I don’t have much to add to that debate!! I love that you have your family catchphrase though and the fact that you and your husband complement each other so well!
Thank you Sam, it’s a phrase that gets used a lot, largely because I’m a vegetarian :) And, don’t worry about joining in, not every prompt will inspire, and there is never any pressure x
This was a prompt that intrigued me, and to see how you’ve used this phrase to talk about your relationship – and a special one at that – is very clever and it makes for a really lovely read. Through this post you do get a sense of a special bond between you and your ‘bacon’ working together in perfect harmony xx
Thank you Tracey :) We do work well together, most of the time :)
I’m also lucky e ouch to have found my bacon too :) I love this post. It is a great reminder that while your differences can be a bit annoying sometimes, they actually make you stronger as a couple x
Thank you x Yes, the differences can irritate, but it works :)
Great post, it really made me smile and yes I have found my bacon :-)
Thank you, and I’m glad :)
You sound like a match made in heaven Sara – next week’s prompt?! Great post and never a truer word was said :)
Perhaps! Thank you Suzanne x
I have to admit to not hearing the phrase before, but I completely know where you’re coming from. My husband is the one still pottering when we should’ve left the house five minutes ago (against the project plan I had put together). I am the one who booked appointments to view houses five days in advance, to a well timed itinerary. He walks into an estate agent on the day, arranges a viewing for 30mins later, for the home we now live in.
I’m so glad you found your bacon!
Thank you. That story about the houses sounds just like something that would happen to us, after all my planning and stress, he would just walk in and find the ‘one’ without even trying :)
Aww, I love this Sara. And you and your Mr sound so like me and mine – even down to the getting up in the night vs the messy bottoms! A really sweet post, loved reading it! Xx
Thank you Emma x
I got rather distracted by the photo on this post! I have never had bacon with pancakes and I really feel like I am missing out after seeing your photo!! lol
I love how you interpreted the prompt! So lovely to hear how well you and your hubby fit so well together! x
He! I think it’s a very American thing :)
I love the alternative take on this! SO clever – and so very true. I definitely have my bacon with Ross – although sometimes it gets a bit overdone!! Great inspiration for a post. Thank you for linking to PoCoLo :) X
Thank you :) Overdone, I like that, a good description for the not so good moments! Thanks for hosting x
Your life sounds lovely, I sure wish my husband did the painting for me! #sharewithme
I am very lucky. We have our moments, but I do try and remind myself of all the really good stuff when we do x
Ahhhh Sara I LOVE THIS, so sweet. I am a big softy and this is so touching. I am so happy you found your bacon. What a lovely post to write about your bacon too. Haha I was thinking I love my hubby too don’t get me wrong but we are both the same which sometimes makes us butt heads, Two type A perfectionist capricorns in one house can get dangerous. hahahahaha Thank you so much for linking up to Share With Me. I love your posts and so glad you stopped by and joining in. #sharewithme
Thank you Jenny, glad you like the post x My pleasure to join, thanks for hosting x
Missed this one as I am really running dry. I have something in my head but Im just too full last week. But this weeks prompt I have an entry for that already! #sharewithme
Thanks Merlinda, never any pressure :) I look forward to reading this weeks xx
I love this! I thought it was going to be a recipe when I first started reading. This is wonderful. #brilliantblogposts xxx
Thank you :)
Great post! My husband would agree with just the prompt. But on a deeper level I have found my bacon too x
Thank you x
Love this post and while I’m afraid we’re both meat eaters there are other aspects of this that sound so similar to my relationship with hubby. He is definitely the calm one whereas I’m the planner, organiser and continual worrier! He certainly compliments and enhances my life.
Thank you! I’m glad you have someone who complements you too x
Gorgeous and so important to complement one another, Peter is the ying to my yang! He doesn’t eat red meat so can’t say he’s my bacon! Ha!
Thank you x
