The Prompt: Reality

The Prompt 56

Reality; is it what you’re given, what you can’t escape? Or, can it be what you make it?

Can it be changed; are we able to alter our reality simply by looking at it differently?

As a glass half-empty type, do I colour my reality with the pallor of what-ifs and maybes? Would it shine if I focused only on possibility and opportunity?

Is our reality what we choose it to be; through our actions, our choices and our point of view? Can we take what we have wished for, hoped for, imagined and make it real?

At any given moment, it simply is what it is, whether wished for or not. But, the next moment can bring clarity and acceptance, or resignation, or direction.

For me, reality shifts, changing with time and perspective. On a good day I can see the positive and embrace the potential. On a bad day; I feel stuck with it, immobile, weighed down by it.

Reality; it’s the day to day, real-life; all that we’ve done and all that we will do.

Yesterday, today, tomorrow? This is my real-life, my reality, and I must believe that I have the power to make it everything I could hope for.

The reality is that I am blessed, and however relentless and exhausting life is, I am not alone.

  1. Lovely and thought provoking post, Sara.
“Reality; is it what you’re given, what you can’t escape? Or, can it be what you make it?”
I think that reality is a given. It’s our attitudes which make the difference. Xx

  2. You’ve really made me think! I guess reality is a mixture of what life is, and what you make of it. I do think we bring our own personalities to it though – one person’s bad day can be another person’s good – reality shifts depending on your perspective. Great prompt! xx

  3. I love your perspective. You’re right in saying that reality is what one makes of it. I never thought of it that way; that we all have a choice on what is given to us. And at the end of the day, it’s up to us to make it whatever we want, take it however we want. Beautifully written, and as always, a thoughtful and enticing piece :) Happy Friday, Sara! Thank you for hosting!

  4. I think you’re really right that positive thinking (and shaping of our day to day reality) is not necessarily a constant. For some of us – particularly those who weren’t blessed with what gets described as a ‘sunny disposition’, it is day to day reminders, setbacks and recoveries. Looking at the big picture, we’re the lucky ones, our problems will always be the ‘first world’ variety. Great post and prompt :-) X #theprompt

  5. It does take a lot of effort to be a positive person all the time. I know a couple of people who are though and I find them really inspiring to be around. They live by the philosophy that you always have two choices – to dwell on something that has happened and you can’t do anything about, or to move on, start a new day and make the most of what you have.

  6. I love this week’s prompt! Such an interesting concept to ponder… I actually think what we call ‘reality’ is pretty fluid, and dependent hugely on emotions and perspective. It’s fascinating how completely differently different people can respond to the same events, how their realities can be utterly contrasting from the inside even though from the outside it looks like they’re in the same situation. Does that make any sense at all? X

  7. This is a really interesting post hon. I’d say I veer mainly towards being a glass half full type, but I’ve got to admit, I’ve had trouble being my usual positive self so far this year. I’m feeling rather weighed down by all the responsibility on my shoulders. There’s so much to consider right now… Sorry that ended up being really cryptic. Your last line struck a chord though. We’ll never be alone, and that surely is a wonderful thing xx

  9. I’m a half glass empty kind of person too. I can never decide if I want to be a glass half full person as I’m not sure if they are kidding themselves as much as others. Which goes back to me being glass half empty.
