Country Kids: playing tag in the sunshine

Country Kids Playing tag in the sunshine

Well, it feels like it has been a long time coming, but over the last week we have had warmer weather. Yes, really, it has been warm enough for playing tag outside, without coats! I even sat outside, by choice, yesterday :)

As I have watched the kids running around, and listened to their delighted laughter, I have been reminded again just how important getting outside is.

I know that the last few weeks have been frustrating for me, but I hadn’t realised quite how much it had affected them too.

But, the bickering had reached new levels, the cries of I’m bored! had increased in frequency, the emotional outbursts were coming thick and fast. The pent up energy was finding different ways to escape, and no one was enjoying it much.

Seeing the absolute joy in their faces as they played tag was just wonderful; fresh air really is the best.

Now that our drive way is an ice-free zone, they can run (and run and run!)…

And much fun can be had chasing a little sister and making her squeal…

It was entertaining to see them run in opposite directions in an effort to ‘win’. I really wasn’t entirely clear on the rules, but the boys seemed to know what they were doing. Their sister, not so much!

There was a lot of laughter…

With the odd break to study interesting stones…

But really, it was all about the running!

  1. Lol love your pictures as they look like they are having so much fun. Im a bit odd i guess as i dread the weather getting hot . I get how nice it must be to let them ley off steam

  2. Oh how lovely to finally be able to get outside without having to be wrapped up in lots of layers and to be able to run about so much. Your children look like they are having such a wonderful time and really enjoying being able to use up that pent-up energy. Good to see the snow is finally melting too! :-)

  3. Lovely to see the snow arrive and lovely to see it go again! It has been a long time coming for you but I can only imagine the relief at being able to really enjoy the outside space again for more than a few minutes at a time! Gorgeous photos of your three relishing the relative warmth there. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

They were having a fabulous time, and we’ve been able to spend a bit of time outside most days since :)

  4. So funny to see them in t shirts with snow still hanging around behind. N was stwitchy and whiny today, and he’s only been stopped for an afternoin of play. God knows how you’ve done it for so long

  5. How good to be outside again after all that time! It would have driven me mad being stuck in so much and I know how much kids bicker after even a few hours inside!
It’s so strange to see photos of your kids running round in Tshirts with snow on the ground right next to them!

  6. I’m so pleased for you that the snow is at last clearing and the warmer weather is moving in. Gorgeous photos full of fun. I am constantly amazed by the joy that simply running brings to my kids – they’re doing it right now for some reason, up and down the hall and kitchen! x

  7. Haha- proper little Scottish lad bombing around the snow piles in a t-shirt. I’m also a Scottish expat stuck in doors with my kid although we’re stuck because its a blistering 35 oC outside and I think my little pale tot would fry if we ventured out!

Absolutely :) I knew you were an expat, but I hadn’t realised you were Scottish too! Just wait till it’s 30 here and my ghostly children are hiding from the sun…

  8. Nicola Young

At last! I bet you were all so happy to see the sunshine again. Hopefully the big thaw will come now. The kids look likely they had a great time outdoors.

We really are! And, they are so pleased to be able to get outside, they were so excited when they were able to have recess outside again at school :)

  9. It’s funny to see tee shirts and snow in the same pictures, but the children look like they’re having so much fun

  10. looks like they had heaps of fun :)
It never snows in Napier so while Im viewing your photos Im also thinking that my 9 year old son would be just as happy to play with the snow you have left :)

    1. Well, the snow was great, and the kids loved it, but I’ve certainly had enough of it now!

Isn’t it fabulous to see them outside just running around and getting so much JOY from it! Love that there had to be a break to study a stone though – my daughter would have been exactly the same :) Thanks for linking this happy post up at #sharethejoy this week and hope you had a lovely Easter x

  12. There is just something about being free to run and being outside isn’t there! Still lots of snow around I see and we didn’t get even a flurry this year! Your children look like they are having lots of fun #letkidsbekids

  13. Running around like that is so much fun – and exhausing he he – but I’m surprised to see you still have so much snow – eek! #sharethejoy

  14. I don’t think I know abyone who’s had as much snow as you. So glad for you that’s it’s finally properly going away and you’re able to release some pent up energy :) x
