The Prompt: Distance

The Prompt 64: Distance

Removed and remote;
Separated from the known.
Stretched and divided;
Isolated from the familiar.

Disconnected and detached;
Absence is felt keenly.
Disengaged and estranged;
Abstraction clouds the view.

Orbits shift, space is condensed.
The gap is closed, spans are bridged.
Time is paused, perceptions altered.
Boundaries broken, minds connected.

Across expanses, hands reach out;
Lands change, but hearts remain.
Presence felt and spirit grasped;
Distance measured, but not in miles.

  1. Very moving Sara. In view of your personal circumstances I can see how you would feel distance more acutely than most and you’ve managed to convey those feelings in this poem.

  2. Another beautiful piece Sara! I can see how much distance truly affects, and strengthens you all at once. Thank you for hosting us this week! Hope you have a lovely weekend.

  3. Oh hon I’ve got tears in my eyes now, must be so so hard for you being away from everyone and saying goodbye when you leave them. HUGE hugs lovely xxx

      Thank you Leigh, it’s always hard to leave again, but I also know that it isn’t really as far it seems x

    Such depth of emotion here, obviously brought about by your recent travels? I can feel your pull towards home, but I like how you close the distance With the last two verses.

      Thank you Nicola, that is what I was trying to say; the distance is great and sometimes feels huge, but it’s really not as far as I think x

  5. Such a beautiful poem Sara – there is such a sense of longing and sadness in the first two verses but I love the way the poem finishes with “across expanses, hands reach out” and “presence felt and spirit grasped” – a beautiful reminder that even though we are physically apart, the ties of love and family stretch across the miles unbroken.

  6. I too am distant from my family, foreign country… although people are very nice, but difficult to be friends with.

    Loved your poem Sara. I felt it in the heart.

  7. Such a touching post Sara and took me back to when I had my first child and was far from family, hugs. Beautifully written. Thanks for linking up to #brilliantblogposts x
