Summer starts in May, marked by Memorial Day weekend, and ends on Labor Day, which falls the first weekend in September. Irrespective of the weather, summer closes for business as soon as Labor Day is done.
There is sense in this. The kids are back in school, as are the life guards. Vacation is over. Pools close, beach parking returns to normal, routines begin again.
But, the sun. Well, the sun doesn’t know that summer is over.
I write this, sitting in shorts and flip flops. At the end of September.
The pool at which we are members closed two weeks ago. Since then the weather has been fabulous and the kids having been missing the water. But, I thought we were done for the summer, until friends invited us to a barbeque at the weekend, and a swim in their pool.
A bonus pool day for the kids!
In the several hours we were there, I think the 6yo left the pool for about ten minutes. We had to persuade him to get out so that he could eat something. Having wolfed down some spicy sausage and corn on the cob, he was straight back in to the water.
The boys loved the horse floats, and these proved hilarious. Getting on and off was a little tricky, but a lot of fun.
With races and jousting, the boys had a blast.
Before relaxing in the pool chair :)
And watching the crazy dog leap into the pool after balls!
My husband had to have a go on the horses too, although he wasn’t much more successful than the boys, which the wee girl found most amusing.
She of course spent most of her time swimming, so confident and comfortable in the water. It is amazing to watch her, and I can’t imagine it will be long before the floaty disappears. Swim classes have started up again, and she is loving it.
As we rapidly approach October, I imagine this is our last pool day. But, while the weather continues to be bright and sunny, we will make the most of it. Who knows how many feet of snow we may get this winter!
I’m linking up with the wonderful Country Kids at Coombe Mill, as always. Click on the badge to see what everyone else has been up to and be inspired to get outside!

Lovely to get a bonus pool day and I love those horse floats – they look like so much fun! So glad that your children are so confident in the water and that the wee girl is doing so well with her swimming too. The photos of the dog joining in the fun in the pool made me laugh :-)
The horse floats were great fun! The wee girl is doing so well, it’s brilliant :) The dog was hysterical!
It’s great to see how confident your three are in the water, I think that water confidence is something super important to teach kids. Your two boys looks like they’re having a blast playing jousting on the floating horses, they’re fab! It’s great to see Wee Girl spending so much time swimming around the pool too, I’m sure she wasn’t the only one who was laughing at your hubby falling off the horses! Thanks for linking up with me on Country Kids.
I agree, I am so pleased that they all love the water and that they are already confident swimmers for their ages. The horse floats were brilliant, and very funny to watch :)
I know what you mean. Summer is supposed to be over, but last weekend it felt as if it was still hovering! Went to the beach and packed coats and wellies, but when we arrived it definitely felt like flip-flops weather :) #countrykids.
It’s still be warm here, but today has brought thunderstorms!
I would like to be there right now, how wonderful :)
It was wonderful x
Looks like it was a lovely day. I remember as kids visiting friends with a pool and having a great time.
It was a great day, I love seeing the kids have so much fun in the pool :)
Those horse floats are fabulous. it must be so lovely to be able to have an outdoor pool and the weather to go with it, your friends are very lucky. Mind you, I know i couldn’t cope with your winters either! #CountryKids
Yup, the summers are definitely balanced out a little by the winters!
Fantastic that you managed to get some more time in the pool and the sun is still shining. I LOVE those horse floats, I really want to have a go, they look like so much fun!
