Outdoors: what to do when it’s too hot!

When the temperatures hit 30C and you’ve had a busy day, you need to find a way to cool down. Fast.

Without air conditioning to fall back on, you need to get a bit more creative…

The other day the 7yo was wilting. It had been a really hot, muggy day and he was fading fast.

Never one to be defeated he came up with a plan. Not a sophisticated one granted, but a good one :)

Mum, can I have a jug?

And, off he went.

Jug of cold water over the head!

His brother and sister thought this was brilliant. The 10yo had no interest in getting wet himself, but took great pleasure in being the jug bearer…

And the wee girl had to join in!

Her face seemed to suggest that she hadn’t enjoyed the end result much. But that didn’t stop her from doing it again!

Water play in the garden is always a winner, but generally speaking they wait for us to set up the sprinklers or the water table and water squirters.

Turns out a jug is just as good.

It’s the simple things!

  1. Haha this did make me giggle.Your kids will probably remember this day much more than some of the more expensive days out you have with them. It really is the simple things. Love it!! xx

  2. Loving those photos and the expressions on the 7yo’s face and the wee girl’s face – looks like they had a lot of fun trying to cool down and the 10yo looks like he’s having a lot of fun being the one pouring the water! :-) #CountryKids

  3. Let kids be kids

Haha, it definitely is the simple things. If you’ve gotta cool down you’ve gotta cool down. Good fun! #countrykids

  4. I came from a tropical country and water is just ythe best way to cool down! I remember a photo of me in a bucket of water while my mother is doing the laundry! I was a toddler then!

And they do look like they are having fun with a pitcher of water! Their reactions were priceless haha!

We’ve had balloon fights too, but the balloons are such a pain to fill :) Jug of water much easier!!

  5. Looks like a fun way to cool off. We took a train ride and a walk downtown (Austin, TX) yesterday in 39 C heat. It was brutal. I would have loved a pitcher of water to pour over my head.

  6. It’s fab when kids get an idea in their heads and run with it, it’s always fun to watch as madness ensues too! My lot wouldn’t bother with the jug, they’d just jump head first into the river clothes and all! Water play instantly brings a smile to kids faces doesn’t it? It’s great that they all had fun together.

Thanks for sharing with me on #CountryKids.

  7. Something so simple but so much fun…and refreshing too! We love water play here and are forever finding excuses to get wet when it’s hot.

  9. I love how the wee girl is bracing herself during her first attempt with the jug of water!
Water, no matter how it comes, is the best way to cool down and children are so resourceful they don’t need expensive gadgets. a jug is just as good!!
