What more could you need for an hour of fun in the garden? A water filled sledge, sticks, leaves and a little bit of mud…
I remember loving to make potions as a child. Mud pies, flower cakes; as long as it involved dirt, water, leaves, flowers and seeds it was a hit. I particularly enjoyed it when our creations later sprouted green shoots (generally grass!).
There is definitely something to be said for the process of mixing and splashing and digging and sploshing and adding and stirring.
A dash of mud and a sprinkle of leaves!
It’s a serious business making potions in the garden. One where three heads are definitely better than one, where team work results in just the right ratio of dirt to sticks. It has to be stirred and checked, swirled and inspected. Repeatedly :)
Inspected and tested until just the right consistency of leaves and water is reached, and just the right colour of brown is achieved…
There is something quite wonderful about watching your kids do something, without prompting, that you loved as a child. Memories come flooding back, your own childhood comes into focus. You remember how much fun it is to be young and just play outside. No gadgets required.

Aw I love this – I really believe you can find so much fun in the simple things and the natural world and this post shows exactly that. Sometimes kids remind us just how much there is to enjoy in nature. Gorgeous photos too lovely x

Potions are a favourite here too. I love the use of the sledge, it makes a perfect potion container. I wonder how long before you are sharing photos of them all piled in there being pulled along the snow too? Your children are becoming really resourceful with some great imaginative garden play, wonderful to see. thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.
Thank you Fiona, I am really enjoying watching them play together. It’s lovely to see the boys play with their sister, and the imaginative play is the best :) As for the snow, probably not as long as I’d like..!

Oh yes, making potions is so much fun. We have bath time potion making too, as well as several very similar looking potions outside in the garden! :)

I love watching my two doing things like this, too, working together, their imaginations at work. Looks like thy had lots of fun, and that potion looks just about perfect to me :-)

Brilliant fun. We used to also make mud pies, and watery flower perfume. But never known a sledge to be used. Very creative of them.

I remember doing this with flowers to make perfume. It looks like your children had lots of fun making their potion. I hope Ethna will one day find fun in things like this. I may have to remove the ipad from his hands somehow ;0) x

Awww this brings back memories of my own childhood baking mudpies and making petal perfume with my sister. I really should encorage my own children to do these kinds of activites now as well but i do get a bit scared of all of the muddy messes to be cleaned up!
Ah, it’s only mud :) I have to admit I used to be the same, I’ve mellowed a lot in the last couple of years!
