Last weeks post was very current, this week I want to go back a bit and remember a very special, rather unexpected moment.
When I was pregnant with my daughter we always assumed we were having another boy. With two boys already, and a family full of boys – particularly on my side of the family – we just expected another boy.
Everyone asked me if we were trying for a girl.
Everyone asked me if I would be disappointed if I had another boy.
What a ridiculous question. I tended to get a little snippy, and I genuinely did not mind, one way or the other. It was completely out of my hands anyway.
I was horribly ill with this pregnancy. I felt like I had the worlds worst hangover from 6 to 16 weeks. All the time. Once I finally stopped feeling like I was dying (and that I wanted to) I started to suffer terribly in my back and hips. By the time I finished up for maternity leave I was having to get taxis to and from work and I was walking at a snails pace. Literally. I annoyed myself with my slowness.
I did comment to my midwife at one point that this pregnancy was very different (everyone kept telling me it must be a girl… yeah, yeah, said I). She kindly pointed out that it was probably just my age…
The day of my elective section dawned (birth stories are for another day!) and we duly arrived in the hospital at 7.30am. Every person we came into contact with, who knew we had two boys already, asked if we were hoping for a girl. Argh!
In theatre the anaesthetist was particularly excited at the prospect of the baby being a girl…
After the excitement of a med student passing out at my feet, my husband and I were a little distracted. We were brought back to focussing on the job at hand by a squeal from said anaesthetist.
Look what you’ve got!
And so, we got our first glimpse of our beautiful daughter. I think my first words were ‘Really?’.
Having not thought much about having a little girl, I was in complete shock, and more thrilled than I could ever have imagined. She looked so like her brothers, but her features were finer. I spent three days in hospital just gazing at her. She was so calm. So beautiful.
And I fell in love.
Why not hop on over to The Oliver’s Madhouse and take a look at some other magical moments!

yay i love reading about babies and such lovely magic moments! I cant wait for your birth stories now!
Thanks for joining in with #magicmoments #linky! xx
Thanks! I’ll get to the birth stories… 2 & 3 a doddle, it was the first one that was a bit, erm, interesting :)
Oh how lovely. I do hate how people assume because you’ve got one sex, you are desperate for another. Most of us just dream of a healthy baby regardless of sex. It must be lovely for you though to have had the joy of experiencing both genders x
Thank you! It is lovely, they really are quite different – more than I would have expected :)
