The boys were on holiday this week, so it’s been quite busy – keeping them occupied, and stopping them knocking lumps out of each other…! It was also a very sad, and at times scary, week for us with the bombing of the Boston Marathon.
My heart goes out to all those affected. I am also in awe of all the people who ran to help, rather than away, and all the runners who continued on so that they could give blood.
Monday
It was Patriots Day, a holiday in Massachusetts, so hubby was off work. Today is also known as Marathon Monday… Hubby and the boys watched some of the marathon on the TV in the morning (we had already, thankfully, decided that we wouldn’t go into Boston to watch it) and then after lunch, as it was lovely and sunny, we decided to investigate a trail in one of the nearby reservations. We had a lovely woodland walk but we came home and flicked the TV on at 3pm, just after the bombs had gone off at the marathon. Needless to say, our afternoon was absorbed by this horrendous, and terribly sad, event.
Tuesday
My plans for trips to the Boston Children’s Museum and the Aquarium were obviously put on hold and we stayed close to home. Another beautiful, sunny day, so we headed out to the park for the afternoon.
Wednesday
We popped into town in the morning and I treated the boys to a cake in Starbucks before we picked up some supplies for our messy play activity… and in the evening I got things organised for the morning :)
Thursday
Straight after breakfast the boys were desperate to get stuck into our messy play activity – fun with jelly! They loved it :) In the afternoon the boys asked if they could have a water fight and as it’s the first time this year it’s been warm enough, I found them shorts and sandals and let them go for it!
Friday
We headed out to the park in the morning. One of the local parks has a walled in concreted area (with mini roads marked out) where kids can cycle and scoot safely. There are also lots of council owned toys to play with – Little Tikes cars, tricycles, rockers, walkers etc. This is all in addition to a great play park with a sandpit and picnic tables. I suspect we will be there a lot in the summer! It was an odd day today, with the huge manhunt for the Marathon Bomber going on a few miles away from us, I spent a lot of the day reading the news, and I will admit to a sign of relief when it was over.
Saturday
I took the wee girl to a music class as I hadn’t been able to go on Wednesday because of the boys being on holiday. Hubby took the boys to Home Depot to look at wood… In the afternoon I went to a friends for her third of a century birthday party (!) which was lovely, good food, good conversation, lots of babies and lots of fab cake! While I was there with the wee girl, hubby went back to Home Depot to buy wood…
Sunday
I did my usual shopping, followed by tea and cake, thing in the morning. We then headed out for lunch to somewhere that had been recommended to me earlier in the week (located just behind Home Depot… Today it was screws, just in case you were wondering!). The place is a furniture store, but it also has Beantown (various things covered in jelly beans – buildings, flowers, ducks, a huge banana split…?!), an ice cream parlour, burger restaurant, cinema, liquid fireworks (fountains, lights and music!) and a trapeze school…! It was good fun, the kids loved it, we had a great lunch – and I suspect this is another place that will be visited again (and again!). The afternoon was spent building benches for the 6yo’s school community garden (all the Home Depot trips did have a reason!).

It’s a great linky (thanks Lauren!) as it really helps me to keep a proper diary of what we get up to while we’re here in the States – to remember the little things, not just the big stuff.
The bombings were horrifying, tragic and just terribly sad. Boston will never be quite the same again.
