You may have seen the persuasive letters that my 6yo wrote as part of his school project covering persuasive writing and letter writing skills. The first asked us for a hamster, the second told a friend, in no uncertain terms, ‘I am not cute!’.
I had forgotten that he also wrote a letter for his best friend back home. I found it at the weekend, and have now, finally, emailed it to his friends mum!
It is a fairly random collection of thoughts… and while the information about rattle snakes may well be interesting, I’m not sure it’s particularly useful for a boy who lives in Scotland! My son seems to have a fascination with rattle snakes and a little while ago did manage to convince a friends mother than we owned one (and fed it on biscuits!). Just to be clear, we don’t. Have a rattlesnake that is, fed on biscuits or not!
I love that he mentions his sister – of all the things that he could tell his friend, he sees his sister being able to stand up as one of the most important :)
He misses his friend a lot, they were at nursery and school together. Not a week goes by without him mentioning his ‘best friend’ and wondering what he is up to. He tells me what they’ll do the next time they see each other. It’s lovely how strong the bond still is, but it breaks my heart when he gets sad about missing him.
So, I hope that he writes him some more letters, and I will encourage him to… I think it’s important that they continue to keep in touch.
And, well, I’m sure that any future letters will also keep us amused :)

Yeah, I’m not sure where he picks these tidbits up from… And I’m often a little wary of accuracy, but this one has a ring of ‘kids book factoid’!

What a fabulous post – I love your son’s way of thinking. He’s very up to speed with his rattlesnake knowledge! I do hope he keeps in touch with his best friend, you’re so right – he needs to *and we love his letters*

What a great letter – I love his imagination and randomness! I know how hard it is to move them away from friends, we had to do it with my son, we didn’t move to a different country but still far enough away that he can’t see his old friends very often any more :(
It’s really tough, he was so sad when we first moved. It’s been nearly a year and he still has his moments, but he’s made some good friends here now, which has made all the difference. I hope your son manages to see his old friends from time to time xx
So lovely, the rattle snake part made me laugh! So matter of fact, brilliant! It’s hard seeing them miss friends. Little D still talks about a friend of his from nursery who moved away a year ago. I’m surprised he remembers him, but that’s kids for you, they always surprise you! x
They do don’t they? I’ll think he’s doing fine and something will set off a memory and he’ll get really upset. He’s quite a sensitive soul really. But, he does make me laugh :)

Yeah, it’s lovely that he still thinks of his friend – and very helpful advice…!? He does have neat writing when he pays attention, which is sadly not all that often!

Me too – as funny as it is, the main point really is that he misses his friend :( But, writing letters is a fab way to keep in touch, so I will be encouraging more!

It is isn’t it – he did that all by himself, no prompting :) definitely to be encouraged – before he learns to type and loses all interest!

He’s made a couple of good friends here, but it’s interesting that he still thinks of his friend back home as his ‘best friend’ – there’s been no shift on that yet… I’m glad that he wants to write and stay in touch though.
