#S2S2D – Shoulder to Shoulder to Day

Today I am honoured to be hosting the #S2S2D – Shoulder to Shoulder to Day blog hop for Emma Day who blogs over at Crazy With Twins.

Emma has thyroid cancer, and following an operation to remove the tumour, she had to undergo radiotherapy. This treatment left her radioactive which meant that for a number of days, she was unable to go within 1-2 metres of anyone – initial estimates from the doctors were that she would require five days in isolation followed by 10-16 days of having to keep her distance from her husband and older daughter and up to 28 days unable to hug her baby twins! This was a devastating blow to Emma, who had already been through so much.

You can read more about her story here.

Victoria and Firefly Phil have organised the blogging community to support Emma throughout her isolation and into her recovery, setting up this blog hop to allow us to add posts that would cheer Emma up.

Thankfully, the radiation left Emma’s body far faster than expected and she is now able to hug her family again! She has asked that we use this blog hop to raise awareness of the importance of self checking and early detection, of the wonderful work that the Maggie’s Centres do around the country, and to promote the Race for Life – which Emma is running – you can sponsor her here.

Emma has also been trying to find a sponsor for an iPad for the treatment room at Cheltenham Hospital – anything taken into the room becomes radioactive and cannot leave. Online support meant so much to Emma while she was in isolation and she would like others to have the same opportunities.

As someone who is still relatively new to this blogging thing (!), I continue to be amazed at the support shown to others by this wonderful community. So, go on – join in! Whether your post raises awareness, simply raises a smile or shares your own story of cancer, Emma (and the rest of us) would love to read it.

I will leave you with a message from my 6yo who had fun earlier today making a sign for Emma out of Lego :)

  1. Yey for constructing #s2s2d and for building hope. Sara, it is lovely to see your eldest has adopted an all round American smile, loving that lego pride grin!
