The Prompt: Guilty pleasures

The Prompt 16: Guilty pleasures

Guilty pleasures, I have a few! Don’t we all?
Although, guilt is a little strong, don’t you think?

If you’ve read my very first post for The Prompt, which was all about guilt, you’ll know that I don’t really do guilt for the things we shouldn’t feel guilty about…

But, I wonder if we feel guilty for these moments because we feel we shouldn’t be spending time on ourselves? That the time should be spent elsewhere, on our partners, children, housework?! Perhaps we’re embarrassed to admit that we love that new pop song, that new teen movie? Perhaps we feel we shouldn’t admit to having eaten that cake or that chocolate, or enjoyed that glass of wine?

But, you know what? I like my moments of guilty pleasure, and I’m not giving them up just yet :)

…A couple of hours in Starbucks on a Saturday morning; child free, grande Awake tea, free refills (and resulting caffeine buzz), blogging, reading, thinking, chatting to the regulars…

…An episode of The Vampire Diaries or Supernatural; with chocolate and a glass of fizz, no interruptions, no comments about real life from hubby, no discussions on the ability (or lack thereof) to suspend disbelief…

…Watching Never Been Kissed; my go-to feel good movie, or an old favourite; Say Anything, The Sure Thing, Footloose, The Breakfast Club, St Elmo’s Fire… The 80’s may be the decade that style forgot, but give me the Brat Pack and I’m a happy girl…

…Cheesy pop music, Disney movies, High School Musical, Glee, Doris Day… I’m quite partial to a bit of Take That or the Spice Girls… dancing badly round the living room, singing loudly…

…School girl crushes! I’ll watch anything with Chris Hemsworth in it :) But, I have a bit of a thing about Patrick Stewart too…

…Ice cream, by the tub…

I suspect for most of us our guilty pleasures are simple pleasures. A moment of quiet to enjoy something that makes us feel good, cheers us up, makes us smile or even laugh out loud.

They may not be cool, they may be getting a bit old, they may not be good for us. But we love them anyway.

  1. Very true, pleasure should not = guilt! I realised when writing my own that I don’t even have any! My old guilty pleasures are actually more just guilty secrets ;-)

  2. Love EVERYTHING you’ve mentioned! I’m a big fan of 80’s movies (see my post!), adore Doris Day, can sing every HSM song, Supernatural’s one of my favourite shows, and ice cream – again, see my post! And no, not feeling guilty :)

  3. Once again I think we are very similar! I thought of 80s movies too, particularly the brat pack movies and The Sure Thing (which I think I used to be able to quote word for word!). Simple Pleasures not Guilty Pleasure definitely! X

Can’t beat a Brat Pack movie :) And, anything with John Cusack in it! Definitely simple pleasures :)

  4. You are such a great writer. I love your prompts and even though I don’t always join in I love reading yours every week. Now for the guilty pleasures, I love your list of guilty pleasures. A few we share, less 80’s for me but love them all. What a great prompt post as always. I love your perspective on life. NO one really should feel guilty about their pleasures whatever they may be but I think your right most because we feel we should be doing something else or most because it’s a secret and we are embarrassed to share them out loud.

Thank you Jenny, that’s such a lovely thing for you to say x Looking forward to reading yours :) I suspect I show my age by love of the 80’s :)

  5. I love the film ‘ never been kissed’ and I have have a secret crush on the teacher. I may go and watch it this afternoon as its only me and the little lady, and I dont even have to do the school run, as older boys going to their nans. I love Fridays lol.
I love to dance around the house to 80’s music (can’t believe I actually admitted to thta lol ) especially when I’m feeling down. soon lifts me backup :)

  7. You’re right about the simplest things being our guilty pleasures. Sometimes, all I need is a bar of chocolate! I love watching feel-good Disney classics too :)

Absolutely, it really doesn’t need to be much, just something that is entirely for us :)

  8. Great post Sara! You should definitely hang on to all those guilty pleasures, they sound great! I’m not sure what mine is – probably cake, and that occasional glass of ice cold dry sherry after the boy is in bed… Bliss! :)

  9. Sorry for not linking this week. I have lots of ‘guilty’ pleasures but have to admit I do not feel remotely guilty for most of them: food, champagne, chocolate, eating the kids’ sweets (OK, maybe I feel a tad guilty for that one), being pampered, having a long, hot bath on a Sunday afternoon… x

  10. Yep, not guilty pleasures, simple pleasures! I used to go off to the cinema on my own…watch whatever I wanted to watch, eat whatever sweets I wanted (though flinching at having to pay for them myself!), laugh as loud as I like or cry as much as I like…thanks for hosting #theprompt Sara :) x
