The 5yo often surprises us. His questions, his view of the world, his favourite things.
As part of an open house at his school this week he had to prepare an All About Me sheet. These sheets were then dotted around his classroom for parents to find the one belonging to their child. To guess who based on the answers.
As soon as I saw the 5yo’s I knew it was his. I didn’t need to look at any others. To be honest, I didn’t need look past the one answer that jumped out at me:
Favourite food: broccoli
It couldn’t have been anyone else. What other 5yo would list their favourite food as broccoli?!
He is growing into such a confident little boy. I have already written about how proud I am of his love of learning. But, I am also proud of his imagination, his positivity and his originality.
I can’t imagine any of his classmates saying that they were really good at the tight rope…!
I love that he still enjoys Curious George; because he is just as curious and loves to see how George solves his problems.
I love to watch him walking along the street, or playing the garden, completely absorbed in his own world. A world that I imagine is filled with curiosities and fascinating things; with problems to solve and stuff to build; with an endless supply of questions to ponder and facts to learn.
I have been very aware this week that he is heading into his last couple of weeks of preschool; his safe and familiar environment. The long summer holidays await; and then the start of big school. He is so excited, and I just hope that it can live up to his expectations.
He is developing a strong, and often unique, view of the world. As he navigates his way through new experiences and difficult lessons, he demonstrates a strong and consistent personality. I hope that my husband and I can nurture that, help him retain his sense of curiosity and wonder, and remain confident in his own choices and his own interests.
He is an original; and we love him very much.

Thank you, he does love his broccoli :) He might have had a bit of help with the writing from his teachers ;)

He’s a bit of an open book :) But, he is definitely very individual!
What a unique little boy, I can’t imagine anyone choosing broccoli as their favourite food regardless of their age! You sound so proud, and rightly so :-D

He sounds like a boy wise beyond his years. I think that he will enjoy big school cuz if its not good enough he will make it a better place with his originality =) #loudnproud
He is a clever boy, I just hope his kindergarten teachers can keep up with him!
This is a lovely post, Sara. I love that he chose broccoli – no way my kids would say that! Such original answers and thinking. I like that idea. It would have been good if they had given you the same form to fill in before your child did, so you could see how your answers matched – like a kind of mr and mrs!
Oh, that’s a great idea, that would definitely be interesting. I would have got most of it right, except for favourite colour which changes on a daily basis (and is actually ‘golden’ this weekend) and I would never have picked Kumbaya..!

Such a lovely boy! And a very original taste in food. Do you think he is aware of his own originality and perhaps seeks it out? Is that possible yet at five, do you think? I know I always wanted to stand out from the crowd, and I remember choosing black as my favourite colour when I was little because everyone else already liked pink.
I don’t think so, I’m not sure that it would occur to him to do that yet, although that may well come as he does have very definite ideas :)
What a lovely picture and a great word for the week :) My two are a little random with things like this too; they listed their favourite foods as cabbage and brussel sprouts the other week. Bizarre!! lol x

He sounds like a brilliant kid – all his answers are fantastic, though I think I like the tight rope one best. Incidentally, broccoli’s one of Arthur’s favourite foods too at the moment – not sure how long that will last though! x
