Moving into a new house is always full of surprises; and when that house dates back to 1830, the discoveries can come thick and fast; so my word of the week is discovery!
We knew that the house would throw up interesting challenges… and so far it has succeeded in meeting that expectation.
Nothing major (yet), but the leak in one of the bathrooms that revealed a corroded pipe that had been repaired with duct tape was an interesting discovery! Thankfully I was standing next to the fridge when the water started to trickle down the wall…
There is no overhead light in the wee girls room, she has been telling us for the past week I no like this room…
The light in the upstairs hall doesn’t work which makes getting to bed after the kids have gone down, and the house is pitch black, rather interesting… Note to self, remember to leave the bathroom light on at the top of the stairs!
A random selection of sockets work… Only an issue when you leave your phone charging (or not charging as the case may be)!
Moving an old fridge to get access to replace a corroded pipe may result in driving to your old house at 11pm with bags full of food to put in the fridge there; and a bag full of ruined frozen food. Just saying.

Oh my word your house is nearly as old as America itself ;-) I’d suggest a small torch to carry around. Sounds like a complete rewire ( and ‘re-plumb?) Is required?? X #wotw
It is indeed :) Torch is a great idea, now to find one in the boxes! Hoping we won’t have to do a complete re-plumb/wire, but sections definitely need looked at :)
Sounds like a fun week! Glad you discovered the pipe before too much damage occurred. Moving house always comes with fun discoveries like these – we discovered some interesting wiring in both our last two homes – none of the plug sockets were earthed in our old flat – as you can imagine we made sure that was fixed quite quickly! Hope you are enjoying turning your new house into a home :-)

I think we do! I love the character of the house, and I wouldn’t swap that for an easier ride on the DIY :)
Aaahh! I was so hoping the old house ‘discoveries’ were going to be 100 year old love letters hidden under the floorboards or antiques in the attic, but no, not quite as lovely and romantic as that! Old houses certain are fun and games! Our first home was built in the 1800’s and that provided us with years of interesting discoveries! I’d love to have an old house now but our current home was built in 1987 and believe it or not is considered an ‘older home’ by Canadian standards!
1987! That made me smile :) Our house is one of the oldest houses in our town… The Historical Society are very interested in what we might do!
Oh man! It sounds like such a fab project, and to create such a wonderful home… but I do love the DIY fixes that people apply- a friend moved into her house and found lots of ‘upside down’ power sockets?! Hope you don’t find too many more less positive discoveries and lots more hidden gems!
