Word of the Week: Patience

patience

This week has been long, tiring, fun, frustrating, quiet, cuddly. It has been full of coughs and sneezes; and Frozen… It would have been very easy for me to pick a negative word; with my husband away and a house full of sick children!

But, I have had infinitely more patience this week than I would ever have expected. I’m not the most patient of people…

The kids have been wonderful, all three of them have coped with their dad being away really well, and the boys have actually been a huge help. I have been pleased, and very proud of them.

The boys have also both been sick; as have I. I’m keeping everything crossed that I get through the weekend without the wee girl coming down with something!

My children are rarely ill; they inevitably choose their moments (because of course they choose to get sick!) to coincide with occasions where I am on my own!

Our days have veered from great fun to miserable; with little warning.

The boys coped really well and although they were both feeling awful, they didn’t whinge. The 5yo even managed to get to the bathroom, throw up (mess free) and get himself back to the sofa; all while I was trying to deal with his sister and a delivery man. Bless him, he’s such a wonderfully independent little man.

Patience has been a necessity this week, or I would have broken down. I had to just grin and bear it and remind myself of all the lovely things the boys had done. How helpful, kind and mindful they had been. And accept that we were all ill, and had our grumpy moments. Deep breaths, lots of them :)

I only had one moment where that serenity and patience failed me. When I realised last night that the wee girl had taken the 5yo’s folder out of his school bag and distributed homework, notes and a (sealed) envelope containing a large cheque for after school activities around the house… I was alerted to this when the 8yo came and handed me the cheque?! Half an hour later we had found everything that she had hidden… I will admit that I was not entirely patient with her for that thirty minutes!

How has your week been, what would your word of the week be?

  1. Sounds a really tough week, and just typical when you were alone, too! I hope you’re all feeling better now. I find I surprise myself with my patience at the worst times, as like you. it’s not something I’m normally good at! And I do not blame you at all for losing your patience with the wee girl there – nightmare! Hope you all have a relaxing and healthy weekend, thanks for sharing with #WotW x

Everyone is fully recovered now, thankfully, and the wee girl has so far escaped… Keeping fingers crossed it stays that way!

  2. Oh Sara, it reassures me reading this! I have been feeling pretty rotten today myself and patience has been in short supply – why do kids bicker more when you have a splitting headache?? I’m going to try harder tomorrow though, and attempt to see the positives in the behaviour of my little three! Hope you feel better soon lovely xxx

Thanks Emma, we all seem to be recovered now! I have taken a lot of very deep breaths, and we have all had our, understandably, grumpy moments, but focusing on the good has helped hugely!

I think if I’d allowed it all to get to me I’d have cried, so lots of deep breaths and gritted teeth! Which actually did give me the time I needed to refocus on the good :)

  3. Well done you for coping as marvelously as you have in the face of adversity – especially after the wee girl scattered the 5yo’s papers everywhere! Hope you’re all on the mend real soo and your the reunion with hubby is lovely xxx

  4. I don’t know how you stayed so calm! I think you are permitted 30 minutes of being slightly less patient in that instance. I try to be very patient with my son, however, I do reach my limits. Ugh, I always feel so guilty whenever I loose my temper with him though and end up really regretting when I loose it, but I think that kids need to also learn about human nature (within limits).

I’m glad you survived your husband’s absence and you sound like you are so well organized and put together!

Thank you Angie, I’m not generally so patient or organised! But, I think I knew that I needed to remain positive and look for the fun or I would have gone slightly nuts :) As I said, we did all have our grumpy moments, I just managed to remain calm, on the whole!

  5. OMG – you are a saint! That sounds like no fun with everyone ill and the husband away. I find it difficult on my own with two let alone three! Hope everyone’s starting to feel a bit better now. X #wotw

Well, as I said, we did have our grumpy moments… I think the difference was that I didn’t let them get to me so much, and I didn’t really lose my temper at all; occasionally, but not at every little irritation :)

  6. Oh it is so difficult being ill with children, but especially if they are ill and you are solo parenting! Good for you to have so much patience. I hope you are all well soon x #WOTW

  7. Thirty minutes of impatience is nothing compared to the patience you have shown throughout being nurse and ill at the same time. Hopefully next time the children choose to be sick (love that thought!) they do it when their Dad is around.

I think that Patience was a nice positive word for you to choose!…Popped over from #WotW!

Thank you, I was determined to be positive and to take the week as it came without letting it get on top of me x

They just know, don’t they! This weeks it’s strep, with all three on antibiotics not sure I’ve been quite so patient so far…!

  8. Congratulations on getting through what sounds like an incredibly tough time. I don’t know what it is about illness, but it brings out a side of me I didn’t know existed too and I’m always astounded that I managed to get through it without a breakdown! Although I totally think you reaching the end of your patience at the hidden papers was justifiable!! Whoops!

Yes, I have to admit I surprised myself. Although the kids are sick again this week and my patience is now wearing thin :)
