The Prompt: Procrastination

The Prompt 62

My husband has been away again this week.

Each time he goes away I think, I’ll get lots done in the evenings, get ahead of myself, take the pressure (entirely self-inflicted!) off.

Each time he goes away I get virtually nothing done. Much less anything extra!

I faff. I procrastinate.

I can’t decide which thing on my big long list to do first.

So, I find distractions. I find reasons for not starting. I find excuses.

But, the thing is, while I waste time delaying and flitting from one thing to another, I could actually be doing; and by extension, achieving.

Something I often feel I’m not.

A friend gave me a wonderful card when we moved into our new house (knowing that we had a lot to do). It simply said, begin anywhere.

What fabulous advice. Because it really is as simple as that.

When I procrastinate, and I am the queen of procrastination, I get nowhere. No one task gets completed. I feel dissatisfied, frustrated, unproductive.

All it would take is ticking one thing off my to-do list!

It doesn’t matter what, it doesn’t matter how small a task it is, it doesn’t matter if it’s the least important.

It is still something.

Which is definitely better than nothing.

And, how much more positive is that?

So, my challenge to myself is to begin anywhere.

Because anywhere is better than nowhere.

  1. Love the sentiment behind the card hon, abd its true. Whatever the something may be, we have to start somewhere :) hope you get more done this week, the never ending to do list is a bear isn’t it xx

  2. I can SO relate to this! Whenever I get just 15 minutes to myself i get so excited that I could get something done that I end up taking the whole time trying to decide where to start. x #pocolo

  3. Excellent post. I’m with you on the procrastination and the feeling of dissatisfaction that comes with it. Starting just anywhere is a great idea. Sometimes I surprise myself with how much I get done by basically taking a running jump and flinging myself at the project! Good luck! xx

  4. Ohmygoodness — I love this!! I may adopt it as my new mantra!!

I always take into consideration something else I once read, which was, ‘can you do it in 10 minutes? If you can, do it’. Since I read that, I’ve been living by it and it’s really amazing how much you can do! Just by doing the odd 10 minute job here and there! Popping over from #PoCoLo

  5. Those are powerful words, and a great attitude to have. I’ve just gotten back from Easter break, and like you, I’ve gotten nothing done (remnants of my “doing nothing” from last week carried over to this week). Starting is always an obstacle, but its true what that card says, starting anywhere is the key. Hopefully you and I will accomplish something. Big or small, it’s something, right? Thank you for hosting this week!

  6. I love the thought of beginning ‘anywhere’. Sometimes it take so long to begin something because we have decided we must do it in a certain way. But even if you don’t feel like you got things done this week, I bet you did. Maybe just not the things you really wanted to sort out.

  7. So true anywhere is better than nowhere! Nice words. This is I think what im doing now with my fitness. I know I need to lessen my food intake but I chose to start my fitness with exercise as I know the food stuff is hard and this is what I tell myself, better to start somewhere than to not start at all! #pocolo

  8. That’s a really positive outlook, Sara. Procrastination can seem like a good option when you’re feeling swamped, but sometimes all you need to do is strike a simple thing off the list to make it feel like you’re winning xx #ThePrompt

  9. I can relate so much with your post I could have written it myself, Sara. So true that the best thing to do is to start somewhere, anywhere.i will remember that tomorrow morning when I look at my list of things to do.

  10. That’s a really good piece of advice, it creates the impression you’re breaking it down into smaller, more manageable chunks then. I think we constantly beat ourselves up over what we haven’t done, and forget to acknowledge what we have!

  11. I am with you on this. That is excellent advice, sometimes I don’t get anything done because I have so much to do I just don’t know where to start. I think I will Begin anywhere too! One tick off the to do list is much better than none!

  12. So simple! And such great advice. I’m much the same when the Hubby goes away, I vow to get lots done and then do nothing. I hope you rise to your challenge, good luck!

  13. Lovely card from you friend, with a great sentiment. I know exactly what you mean as I procrastinate a lot when things never take as long to complete as I think they will, so I should just have got off my bum sooner! X
