Pride comes before a fall.
Proverb
There is a moment:
sense (of self and worth)
expands, and teeters
on the edge of
self-importance.
There is a moment:
pulse (of airs and graces)
heightens, and quivers
on the brink of
pretension.
There is a moment:
noise (of pride and conceit)
roars, and crashes
over the edge of
arrogance.

Powerful and thought-provoking as always – yours are posts that I reflect on and not just when reading.
I’m reading lots into this poem. I was tempted to write something about LGBTQ pride for this one, but considering I’ve been married to a man for 13 years thought I should leave that to those living the experience, I like your point about Pride coming before a fall, having been reading up on stories around the Tower of Babel all afternoon, I’m wondering if it’s truly a fall (not a push?).
What I really like about this is how the form and structure of the verses echo the meaning – teetering on the edge of a line of poetry and then tumbling into the conclusions. Great!
I completed a parent/child poetry project with my daughter this week, yes we both got homework! I really enjoyed doing it because I love finding meanings and messages in poems as well as enjoying forms, structures and sometimes rhyming. I loved the last verse in particular of your poem, really powerful and relatable. Pride really does come before a fall. #prose4thought
I love the pace and rhythm of this piece. It’s so beautifully written. #Prosw4T x
