First;
Summer shines brightly,
long and warm and fun.
A caravan by the sea,
ice cream on the beach;
cycling, legs spinning,
furious and fast,
carefree.
Running over fields,
dam building, den making,
back home for snacks.
Time spent with family,
simple moments,
uncomplicated fun.
Days sparkle with possibility,
moments to treasure.
And then;
Summer lingers sleepily,
lethargic and lazy and chilled.
Summer jobs,
earning, spending, relishing;
friendships and gossip.
Holidays in the sun,
new friends made on the beach;
whiling away the hours,
no sense of time passing.
Drinking and dancing,
young and immortal.
Days glow with youth,
moments to treasure.
Later;
Summer speeds by quickly,
escape from work, brief;
too short holidays.
A bit of sun, a bit of fun;
drinks by the pool,
laughter and love.
Travel and excitement,
city breaks, snatched days.
Relaxing, reliving, recharging;
returning.
Meeting, making, breaking;
loves and lives and choices.
Days reflect the future,
moments to treasure.
Now;
Summer is too fast and too slow,
days merge into one.
A blur of activity and laughter,
children’s voices raised in joy;
beach days, swimming, sandcastles,
running, climbing, swinging.
Parks to visit, people to see,
memories to make;
priorities changed and new,
perspectives shifted.
The ordinary, the special;
the frustration and the boredom,
the highs and lows.
Expectations;
missed, met, exceeded.
Days bubble with wonder,
moments to treasure.
This summer has been a strange one. Although lovely in many ways; moving house, with all that entails, has meant that it hasn’t been as much fun as I would have liked. I knew from the start of the summer that it wouldn’t be the best for the kids and to be honest, I wrote it off before it even started. I feel like I almost wished it away; wasted the days. But, I also know that it couldn’t have been any other way. I am thankful for old friends and family that have visited; for fun days with new friends, who have made us so welcome here; for the sunny happy moments that we have had. Next year we’ll be settled, next year will be different.

Fab memories here Sara, old and newer. Don’t beat yourself up about summer not being the most amount of fun. I’m sure your kids don’t feel this way at all xx
Moving house with kids is never easy, I’m sure they’d say that they’d had a great summer!
Lovely the way you’ve expressed summer through the life stages and so true. Summer is just a special time when you’re little I reckon so I wouldn’t feel bad about the whole house move – anyone can see from reading your blog that they’ve had a summer that memories are made of with trips to the beach and Storyville and the swings – that’s all kids care about really and memories tinged with the warmth of the sun and coloured by blue skies are always the special ones. X
Lovely exploration of how summer changes as we grow older. I love ‘days sparkle with possibility’ and ‘days bubble with wonder’. You’ve captured it all really well. xx
This is lovely. Love the way you have gone from childhood memories through to adult ones and the ones as a mum. Beautifully written. Glad you have still enjoyed summer despite all the hecticness and upheaval and hope that next summer will be a lovely settled one full of making more happy memories x
A beautiful poem, eloquently expressed exploring summer through the ages of one’s life x
This was a really lovely read. It’s hard when you wish time away isn’t it. Sounds like you still got in a lot of lovely memories xxx
Lovely post. I understand how stressful moving can be, but it sounds like you still had loads of fun. :)
You’ve captured so many summers in this poem – a beautifully written post! We had almost the opposite issue here this summer, with both me and Leigh putting so much pressure on ourselves for it to be brilliant as it was one of our last long summers before his new career as a doctor takes over. I think we just about got the balance right, but I wish we’d spent more time enjoying it rather than thinking about it! I don’t think Arthur noticed though – he had a great time, and I’m sure your kids did too xx
Lovely poem. You are so right that summer brings moments to treasure no matter how young or old you are.
This is a lovely poem, with a bitter sweet prose at the end. I’m sure the children have had a fabulous summer, enjoying their new adventure. Moving house is never easy, especially with the children, but it sounds like you do have some good memories of it, have had fun with friends & family and have enjoyed it albeit a short one. Summer never seems to last long enough! #the prompt
The kids will have enjoyed it. Only we’ll remember the not so great bits. Lovely reflecyon of summer times passed. x
Lovely piece of writing.
Getting settled in the new house was always going to take some time, but at least it’s done and now you’ve got the freedom to get up to what you want as a family. Am sure you had some wonderful times over the summer despite the busy-ness
Lovely poem, sums up our summer. There are always memories to be made and summer ones are some of the best #sharewithme
Ahhh hunny I know you have DONE A LOT this summer that might have messed up your play but there is always next summer to make up for it. lol Beautiful poems, I love your poems. And your prompt so sorry it’s been forever since I joined in. I am so far behind on my linkys and posts to write. It’s unmanageable with two tots at the moment and redecorating. But excuses excuses. I still love you and your beautiful blog. Thank you so much for linking up to Share With Me. It’s my first week back in the UK and my one year blog birthday so it’s very busy busy in the LTM household. I am hosting giveaways everyday this week so a bit behind on commenting. So sorry. #sharewithme
